Doesn't matter if they want him unless they're willing to give up multiple big pieces. Have to think the Jays would accept a deal of Weaver/Reyes and someone like Piscotty/Grichuk though. Then you could sign a guy like Frazier on the FA market and the Jays "get better for next year".

What's one WAR worth these days? Still around $10M? Probably a bit more, but let's call it $10M. You can reasonably project Donaldson for 6 WAR next year so even at a salary of $17M, he's still a $40M+ asset just for 2018 alone. Lol that trade. Holy f*** does Billy Beane suck.

We need to trade Donaldson in the off-season. His value will decline the longer he plays.

We only have him for 2018, and we're not making the playoffs next year.

Maybe ask for:

Jose Martinez (can play 1b/LF/DH). Is good but underrated and the Cards have too many outfielders anyways.

Tyler O' Neill. Decent prospect. Lots of power. Bad K numbers, but that formula seems to work. And Cardinals don't need OF.

Luke Weaver. Kid is looking good so far.

Jack Flaherty. Cardinals have plenty of pitching.

Might not be able to get O'Neil, Weaver and Flaherty, but should get 2/3 easy plus Martinez.

Rosenthal won't be back until he's a free agent, will he?

I'd love to get Reyes, Bader, and Wong (I mean, I'd love more, but I think I could live with that).

Maybe we take Rosenthal's expiring contract to get a better prospect in the deal? Don't think he makes that much to call it salary relief for the Cards though. Does he?

He's arbitration eligible in his last year, so will likely be non-tendered.

I'll take a deal built around Wong and Weaver. I'll take the safe 2-3 WAR players with multiple years of control vs a boom or bust prospect. If you try to acquire a future MVP for Donaldson, you will likely be disappointed.

That's like, exactly what Billy Bean Counter thought when he targeted Lawrie and Graveman!

Alex Reyes, Jedd Gyorko (we need someone to play third), Magneuris Sierra, and Sandy Alcantara.

Buying low on Reyes could work out like Shapiro trading for Carrasco back in the day. I think he's still recovering from tommy john, so he might miss part of the year, but whatever. Let him heal and then see what happens. Pitchers are time bombs anyway, might as well go with the one with the highest upside. Stick Gyorko at third so you have someone competent there, and then you have some prospects to fill out the farm.

Would Gyorko + Reyes be enough?

Gyorko is actually good --- 4.8 fWAR / 6.5 bWAR in his last 919 PA.

Under control through 2020 (option year) for $9M, $13M, $13M.

He has value.

I think Gyorko + Reyes might be about as much as you can reasonably expect.

When Atlanta traded one year of Heyward to STL in 2015 (for $7M in salary) they got like 4 years of Shelby Miller in return and a ~B prospect (Tyrell Jenkins; busted).

What other recent trades have their been for one year of a superstar? Deadline deals don't count.

Gyorko + Reyes + an outfielder (Piscotty or Grichuk)? I mean that's the closest the Jays will get to a deal that fits both short and long-term objectives. Gives them a 3B to replace JD, an outfielder to fill one of those spots, and then a young starter with six years of control to put in the rotation. Edited by glory

Not quite superstar, but Bauer, Shaw for Choo

Everyone's fav. writer had a question about this today:

Dane Iorg: Who says no to this deal: Carson Kelly, Jack Flaherty, and Jedd Gyorko for Josh Donaldson. Cards? Jays? Both? Neither?

Keith Law: I think the Cards would and should say no to that. Very likely everyday catcher, with some upside beyond that; very likely back-end starter with modest upside; both major-league ready and cheap for six years. Ton of value there, and we’re not talking about highly volatile A-ball kids.

I think he was high on Barreto, too.

Weaver and Wong are certainly less risky than Lawrie and Barreto were, those are two players you can plug in and expect performance and tons of control.

Why Wong when we have Travis, no thanks. Weaver's a nice target, I'd rather Reyes' upside and Gyrko +... all day. I don't think the Jays move JD, regardless. It'll have to be an overpay.

Ok swap out Wong for Gyrko. But you aren't getting 4 years control of him, 6 of Reyes and Weaver for 1 year of Donaldson.

You do realize how good JD is right? The guy's a f***ing baseball Cyborg, if he had stayed healthy early on, he's in the MVP talks again, or walks away with it.

The Jays do need a 2B (I ain't trusting Travis again), but no thanks to Wong. Gyorko is necessary to have a capable 3b to replace JD, but the rest of the return better be players with more long term value/upside. Reyes would be my pick. Maybe the Cardinals are sleeping on him because of his injury. Shapiro was the GM in Cleveland when they got Carrasco. He knows what's up.

Doesn't matter. He'll be 32 in 2018 and only have one year of control.

We could look at playing Martin 1/2 time at 3rd if necessary. It would probably improve his bat quite a bit and keep him healthy, and the other half of catcher could be easier to fill this offseason than other positions. I don't think Gyorko would be absolutely necessary.

Speaking of 3B, what the hell happened with Lawrie? He's practically dropped off the planet it seems.
