AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2017 Posted September 14, 2017 So far this year, Miguel Cabrera has posted -0.2 WAR fuelled by a 246/329/396 line as a poor defensive first baseman. He's 34 years old, and is owed: 2018: $30 million 2019: $30 million 2020: $30 million 2021: $30 million 2022: $32 million 2023: $32 million 2024: $8 million buyout Total $192 milion for below replacement level production. He will single-handedly cripple the Tigers over the next six years, unless he rebounds. So, no more whining when we don't sign Josh Donaldson etc to a six year deal.

Depends on his health, which imo is the only driving factor behind his bad offensive year. Defensively, he seems to rate in the upper quarter of qualified 1st baseman this year, so I wouldn't really call him poor in general. If his health issues really turn out to be chronic, that deal is going to look very, very bad. If he figures out how to manage them, he'll likely return into the 3.5 to 4 WAR range.

Miggy has struggled with injuries this year. If the Tigers were sensible they'd have shut him down at the end of August to let him heal. IMO it's far too early to write him off, and he could play up to his contract for a few more years. But even so he's obviously not going to be worth $30m a year for each of the next 6 seasons.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2017 Posted September 14, 2017 Chronic back injuries. This may be the new Miggy.

I have literally not seen or heard one person of sane mind advocate for signing Donaldson (or any other 30 something FA) to a 6+ year contract.

I'll give Miggy a mulligan on this season. He wasn't 100% and has been one of the best hitters in the MLB for the past decade. Sure he could be slowing down, as every aging slugger does, though I wouldn't completely write him off just yet after one bad injury-plagued season. If he continues to be below replacement level again in 2018, then we can make that argument. Regardless, the contract even at the time when it was handed out likely was a mistake and there was a good chance that the latter part of the deal was going to be like throwing money out the window. So even then, there was the potential for it to be the worst contract in baseball.
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted September 15, 2017 Posted September 15, 2017 Given Miggy's health issues he'll get somewhat of a pass. It's a bad contract, Pujols' is still much worse.

Ten years after Pujols retirement he's still got to make personal appearances exclusively for the Angels though...that has some value behind it too.
Hipfan Verified Member Posted September 15, 2017 Posted September 15, 2017 I had no idea he was playing so poorly this year! I hope it's just due to injuries and that he bounces back and has a few more highly productive years left. He is an amazing hitter and it would be a shame to see him drop off so quickly.
jimedmonds Verified Member Posted September 15, 2017 Posted September 15, 2017 imagine if Bautista got that $150M for 5 year deal that he was clamoring for last year... I think Cabrera will rebound next season if healthy, but probably a slow decline from here on out. Hope he doesn't put up Pujols numbers for the remainder of his career - probably won't because I actually believe he is 34 years old. When you put Pujols' current season into context of production from a 45 year old, it's actually quite remarkable.
