FIAF Verified Member Posted July 27, 2017 Posted July 27, 2017 Hello. Just wondering why he never starts when he's been one of the better hitters for a while now. Sure he's not a power hitter but he gets things going. Should be a starter.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2017 Posted July 27, 2017 Because he sucks. Should pretty end the thread right there....

Sure he's not a power hitter but he gets things going. Should be a starter. He's just such a horrible fielder. Seems to ALWAYS throw to the wrong base, doesn't hit the cutoff man, etc (and this is his 7th year in the league). Those don't show up as errors, but they most certainly lead to runs for the opposition. His bat just doesn't make up for it, and even that has been below average prior to this year.

Carrera is an adequate 4th outfielder and in that role he's providing some value especially considering his low salary. He's not a starter because he's not very good defensively, and his bat isn't elite enough to make up for it and therefore make him a must play.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2017 Posted July 27, 2017 (edited) I hope they trade him. I don't like watching him play Baseball. Edited July 27, 2017 by Jonn
Governator Community Moderator Posted July 27, 2017 Posted July 27, 2017 Carerra has shown to be a replacement player at best when given full time play. He's a capable 4th OF tho and at least gives us some speed off the bench like pinch running for Tulo today. I think they are using him the best they can right now and getting the most out of him while they can. His offensive numbers will drop in the second half, his BABIP is not sustainable.

Virgil_Hiltz Verified Member Posted July 27, 2017 Posted July 27, 2017 Maybe the question should be why Carrera and not DSJ in a lost season. At least DSJ has potential while Carrera has topped out at a medicority.

Governator Community Moderator Posted July 28, 2017 Posted July 28, 2017 Tulo really sucks, yet starts most games. But his backup really really really sucks.
polar bear Verified Member Posted July 28, 2017 Posted July 28, 2017 But his backup really really really sucks. Not with runners in scoring position,he don't. Now Tulo really, really sucks at that. And I'd say Goins is the better defensively also right now. So there.

Seems as though the eye test has failed you on this one, statistically speaking Goins definitely is not the better defender at SS, so you have no basis for having that opinion.

Holy f***, people are making a big deal about this?

Holy f***, people are making a big deal about this? It's all SSS, but Goins has some really interesting career numbers. He's talked about a different approach with RISP. Career with no one on, he has a 50 wRC+, runners on 70, risp 82. Now look at his spray chart. Opposite field 118 wRC+, center 92, pull 52. Talk about him being better with RISP compared to other players may be a bit silly, but I think there's some foundation to suggest that he himself is a much better hitter with guys on. Now if we could just get him to stop trying to pull the ball at all

Far too small a sample size to even try to project that to future performance (which if you can't do, makes it useless in practical terms). Even the sample sizes for what I mentioned are far too small to really be useful in general, but they do hint at something that may be worth exploring in conjunction with Goins statements on approach.
puphood Verified Member Posted August 1, 2017 Posted August 1, 2017 Tulo sucks at the plate and has for a while, Goins is even worse. History would say Tulo is defensively better but that is history. The real value is present day playing $ value and the answer is Goins.......

History would say Tulo is defensively better but that is history. The real value is present day playing $ value and the answer is Goins....... tulo has been better defensively this year over Goins. And actually has a history of knowing how to hit. If he all of a sudden had a 850 ops next year no one would really be too surprised. If goins did that there would be articles on fangraphs. Tulo is still our best option at SS
