I think everyone here agrees this team will be selling, and in reality that is better for our long term outlook.

The question is, if you were GM would you trade JD?

Pay him 20+ mil next year and go for it again, only to let him walk?

Sign him for 7+ years?

Obviously depends on the return. I'm no prospect guru (especially the last couple years as our team has been so entertaining), but if you are and vote sell JD...throw in a potential target we could go after.

It depends on the other trades that are made...if there is a chance for a good team wait unless a team offers a ranson. Then reevaluate in the offseason and at worse trade at next year's deadline

The real question is do you trade him to the Red Sox or Yankees if those are the only deals to be made?

None of the other contenders have a need at 3rd base and the Sox and Yankees have the prospects to get it done. Interesting to see if how the Jays FO feels not only trading within your division but your star player to the 2 big rivals.

Trade him. This team ain't getting better next year. They tried to compete in 2017, it failed, and now they can move on with the rebuild.

Trade him anywhere the deal falls

Maybe the Astros? Move Bregman to OF or add something with Donaldson to get Bregamn? /shurgs/ But yeah, can't say I see a whole lot either. 3B is stacked.

Too bad the Mets suck. Would have been good trading partners.

logically, it's to teams that need a 3rd basemen, who's that? Boston and NYY...

Donaldson has been complete s*** for several weeks. He's the key piece to trade in any rebuild talk. But he also needs to hit sometime soon.

Pretty much a disaster with Estrada s***ing the bed as well.

Astros already have the division locked up basically. If they make a trade it'll be for pitching which helps more in the postseason.

I don't think it matters we are heading into a long term rebuild. Get the best deal.

It's up to Donaldson and Ownership IMO. Toronto has enough bank to keep him around at a reasonable (or slightly above reasonable) price. But the decision/extension needs to be made by early off-season this year. If he doesn't wanna stick around or if ownership doesn't want to put that much bank in him then we trade him before opening day next season - regardless if its in the division or not. He's FA in 2018 off-season paired with the fact that we probably won't be competitive enough that year, it won't matter if he rakes in Boston or New York.

I personally hope he stays, I like him and this team needs to remain relevant through a "retooling" process, so even if the deal might look bad in year 5 or 6, it's the price to pay to prevent the Dome from being empty like the ~10 years before the 2015 run.

The Mets rose and fell with the same timeline as us lol

It's not really up to Donaldson at all. He like all the other MLB players tell their agents to get the best deal possible which means likely heading to FA. He has no say if he gets traded or not. I also think the narrative that people are going to buy tickets to watch Josh Donaldson on a bad team false. For Toronto filling the dome has always been about whether the team is good, not a single player.

You live in Hollywood bro, come to a median, you'll be alright!

It's up to Donaldson as in no one is gonna put a gun to his head and force him to sign him and he hasn't been here long enough to know if he prefers to stay with us and is willing to negotiate something. For all we know we could pay him a mega contract but he'd rather go someplace sunnier or closer to family. Wasn't that the reason Grenkie turned down Milwaukee for LA a few years ago?

Also I said Donaldson staying is key for the team to remain competitive and relevant for the next couple of years or not, it's not easy to replace 6-7 WAR with the rebuilding farm system, Edwin gone and Bautista past his time. Like it or not, the team needs a few strong personalities that are likeable to keep the team relevant within the city. No one pays to watch DeRozan and Lowry either, the young fans resonate with them. Think of it as part of marketing the team.

I would say "for Toronto it's all about perception of what the team will be" 2013 sold as many season tickets as 2015 did. If there is no direction for the future, the attendance will fall next year. Last place this year with moves that the fans see as positive (something likely not to happen from this front office as fans usually love the worst of the free agent signings) and the fans buy in the off season.

As for trading Donaldson I don't see that now is the time unless you are blown away and I'm not sure what team would do that. If the Jays are still struggling at the deadline, I see this as the priority of trades.

1. Estrada (should return a Young pitcher...if the Rangers aren't selling should be one of the most interesting rentals available)

2. Goins (should have been a National already...we will take nothing, something, anything. This is just a present for me at this point.

3. Osuna (not a priority but could provide the most return, I don't think he's essential to next year success)

4. Bautista (he wasn't appealing to many in the off-season so how does the current version draw enough in trade to make it worth while to trade him...and how the f*** does a career 130 wRC+ vs. LHP have a 42 wRC+ through 83 PA's this year). Again I don't think the return is there.

Trading Donaldson to the Yankees or Red Sox would be awful especially because they have the means to sign him long term but I still want the best return possible on him.

For the majority of baseballs players they sign with whoever offers them the most term and most $. I wouldn't expect Donaldson to be any different. They have pressure from their agents and the PA to take the biggest deal as that impacts other players in future negotiations.
