gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 What's so different about Latos from when he was decent to now. Velocity drop? How did Latos used to be good? Velocity hasn't changed much. Location, location, location. His secondaries have also vanished, although he had a nice change in his last start.
JaysAllMighty Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 God I hate seeing that fat face on my team
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 Is Schulman tryng to get me to change the channel or what?
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 How did Latos used to be good? Velocity hasn't changed much. It actually has though. His top end velocity used to be 96-97 which he could reach quite easily. There's a big difference between sitting 92-93 and reaching back when necessary to the current version of Latos who can't dial it up to 95. I'm sure the breaking stuff has also suffered.

I guess it has dropped some. 1.4 mph since his heyday according to fangraphs. Not that much though.
King Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 Velocity doesn't look much different to me. http://i.imgur.com/uDzjcOD.png Of note: He got a +1 MPH bump for 2017 like everyone else due to Pitch FX not being used anymore. It's pretty clear his velo has been dropping.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 I'd rather not get in to an argument about Mat Latos' velo with the entire board but it's dropped some. Doesn't really explain the difference between a frontline starter and a bum who shouldn't be in the big leagues. Has to be more to it IMO.

His velo dropped and he lost his effectiveness. It happens to every pitcher. Injuries may have played a role too.

Injuries may have played a role too. I think he lost his ability to locate. You can half ass your way from AAA to the bigs with only two pitches, as long as you can consistently locate while sitting at 92-93. If you can't locate or command, it doesn't matter how hard you throw, you'll get roasted in the MLB.
el duque Verified Member Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 Is Gibbons giving away this game or bringing somebody else to pitch?
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 Latos is too yong to decline, may be there's something wrong with his arm and he doesn't know He's already been injured and lost significant velocity at the time, it's bounced back some but he hasn't been the same pitcher since. It's not uncommon for pitchers to break down after having arm trouble.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 There's nothing to argue. His velo dropped and he lost his effectiveness. It happens to every pitcher. Injuries may have played a role too. Oh we could argue it still. I'm sure pitchers lose 1.5 mph over the course of the careers all the time and don't go from frontline to bush league. If you're simply saying velo drop is the sole reason then I don't think that's entirely accurate. Could be location issues too. His walk rate spiked over the past two seasons. But maybe that's due to lower velo he's nibbling more.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 Latos is too yong to decline, may be there's something wrong with his arm and he doesn't know His injury history includes a shoulder injury and surgery to remove bone chips in his elbow, among other things
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 This isn't Jered Weaver losing 5+ mph.

Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 And that's where the velocity difference plays a big factor. High fastball at 96-97 is unhittable but at 92-93 it's a crushable pitch.
Effit Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 We were so lucky last year to have a healthy rotation.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 Is Gibbons giving away this game or bringing somebody else to pitch? I think he'll let the game play out for a few more innings.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 You guys realize it all connects right. Injuries (Shoulder/Elbow/Knee) = Velo Drop = fall out of sync of mechanics = loss of command Nope but that makes more sense. Just explain it better like that for my feeble brain from the get go next time.
