If you look at team Catching fWAR since 1977, Toronto is 24th out of 30. Of course, of the teams they are better than, five are expansion teams from their year or later.

The (Devil) Rays only have 12.4 WAR from Catchers

The Padres have a LOT of catcher WAR. Gene Tenace, Terry Kennedy, Benito Santiago all have 15+ WAR for them.

lmao

Sad!

Wow that's awful. Ernie Whitt had a nice career, started off rough but after a couple years his prime netted us about just under 20 WAR over 7 years or so. Above average with the stick every season during that period. Martin will become #2 all-time in just his 3rd season.

3B is terrible as well but for Donaldson. Rance Mulliniks is currently in the lead followed by Donaldson who in 2 years almost passed him. Then you've got Gruber in 3rd and Eric Hinske(!) is 4th.

Catching has to be the worst position in franchise history. Ernie Whitt held down the job for a long time and was pretty good at times but it seems like we've been floating from year to year with the Bengie Molina's, Arencibia's and Rod Barajas' of the world until we got Martin.

They are actually 12th in MLB in 3B fWAR since inception.

2B is the worst. 27th in MLB. fWAR hates Alomar's D!

LF (24th)

C (24th)

DH (10th out of 14/15)

1B is the best, 3rd in baseball.

We've had some stud 1B. Delgado, Olerud, Encarnacion and McGriff. They cover decades of full-time 1B play for us. Edited by Terminator

I hear ya we just always have the Quiroz, Phelps, Arencibia, Chip Cannon (although he may have been a non-prospect), Arencibia, Jimenez, etc. I think all of them made lists at some point but for Cannon and Jimenez but none have been any good at all in any facet of the game really.

Didn't they consider Kevin Cash as a catcher of the future as well, even though they thought his bat would be limited, but his defense was supposed to make up for it?

Once he's designated for assignment, he has to get released if he's not able to be traded in the DFA window. That's how it works.

The only way the Jays would have been able to bring him back is by him agreeing to re-sign to a minor league deal with invite to ST, which he's unlikely to do without at least checking around the league for other options first

I'm thinking he's probably going to look for a change of scenery. He's had the injuries, was ranked as top prospect, then was hurt a number of times. He probably is aware that the Jays have Salty, who's likely to win the back up job, Juan Graterol who still is young, has options left, Reese McGuire, Mike Ohlman, and a couple of others who might have surpassed him on the depth charts, so he might think it's just better to move on. He could resign, but without a full season, he might not show what he's capable of. Plus, if I recall correctly, he was eligible for minor league free agency before the readded him to the 40 man roster, so if he was released, or even sent outright, he could refuse the assignment and become a free agent either through his contract expiring, or refusing the assignment. Maybe he comes back, but it's getting crowded. I think the injuries did him in as far as being able to prove himself.
