No money changes hands.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted June 6, 2017 Posted June 6, 2017 Why would they trade for Edwin if they weren't willing to sign him to that exact same contract? Seriously, man?
BTS Community Moderator Posted June 6, 2017 Posted June 6, 2017 Would you trade Smoak for Encarnacion straight up right now? No money changes hands. Edwin looks very unappealing. Numbers down across the board last year, and down again even more this year. I'll pass on the 20M DH's age-35 and 36 seasons when there are very real concerns that he's not an elite hitter anymore.

The price alone is probably enough to pass and that's not even considering giving up Smoak who basically plays for free.

Or am I reading this wrong? (DP's OP)
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted June 6, 2017 Posted June 6, 2017 No money changes hands... so you'd go Smoak > EE, lol. Or am I reading this wrong? (DP's OP) I think the player's contracts are included but the teams don't exchange money to even up the deals at all. So the question is essentially EE and his contract or Smoak and his?

So the question is essentially EE and his contract or Smoak and his? Yes this is what I meant. My question was semi-rhetorical. Summed up as the FO has done a marvelous job/got extremely lucky with what was at the time two of the most despised moves on the board. Actually looking back at it...what hasn't really panned out for this regime so far? The Hendriks trade, and that's not an egregious screw up. Howell as well I guess. This should be a sign that we have a lot of good things to look forward to in the next several years, whether 2017 is a go-for-it or rebuild year.

Hendriks trade Howell signing Pearce so far 3 minor misses, and a whole bunch of wins. The team is in great hands.

By the time this dinosaur team dies off, whether that's this year, next or in 2019 we will finally have some prospects to call up. There's probably not going to be any reason to have a firesale and a long drawn out 5 year rebuild. This is good because watching the team lose a bunch of games sucks but it also makes for a healthier franchise as TO supports a competitive team but won't support a bad one.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted June 6, 2017 Posted June 6, 2017 In a New York minute! You think this is all just Smoak and fire?
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted June 6, 2017 Posted June 6, 2017 Hendriks trade Howell signing Pearce so far 3 minor misses, and a whole bunch of wins. The team is in great hands. Can add Morales (the pitcher) but I think that was only $2 Million. Big picture the FO looks pretty good. The day to day roster moves could still use some work but Atkins is pretty new to the GM role so he gets a pass for now.

I still believe there was solid rational behind the Hendriks/Chavez deal too. Circumstances changed, Chavez pitched like s*** and the deal ends up as one of the worst Shatkins made (which is really saying a lot!)
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 6, 2017 Posted June 6, 2017 Would you trade Smoak for Encarnacion straight up right now? No money changes hands. No If I can add ~17M in salary it's not going to be to replace the admittedly overperforming Smoak with an almost certainly declining Edwin

JosJos Verified Member Posted June 6, 2017 Posted June 6, 2017 Justin smoak contract now look like a huge steal for shatkins. They have many miss but smoak look like a huge bargain so far.

Well they were big into his hard hit rate and it's paying off now that his contact rate is up. Good on Smoak for making the adjustments

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted June 6, 2017 Posted June 6, 2017 Starter Aaron Sanchez played catch again on Monday, moving closer to a return to the Jays starting rotation. How close? Gibbons said he’ll need a couple of rehab starts, but expect Sanchez back before the all-star break … As impressive as the Jays surge towards a .500 record has been, they’ve also shown some resilience in games as well. Seventeen of their 28 wins have been come-from-behind victories. http://www.torontosun.com/2017/06/05/healthy-donaldson-heating-up-as-blue-jays-visit-his-old-team
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted June 6, 2017 Posted June 6, 2017 LOL true Still has a chance to do something for us Yeah man, and he's under contract next year too.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted June 6, 2017 Posted June 6, 2017 Granted, his WAR could still go down later on, but assuming Smoak's current WAR either holds ROS or improves, he's already paid off his contract (not including the option year). Going rate for WAR these days is around $10M per, so he's at $13M value this year already and his two guaranteed years are $8.2M total.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted June 6, 2017 Posted June 6, 2017 It's ironic, considering most considered Smoak's extension to be the most erroneous decision that Shatkins had made to date.
