Apparently Holland hit 95mph today in his first spring outing. Sounds like the worry about his velocity was a bit premature. Wheeler was consistently hitting 97mph also.

Norris wouldn't get in our current rotation though. I mean roster construction doesn't work like that obviously, as the Hutch trade and/or Happ and Estrada signings might not have happened if we still had Norris, but still.

 

No Price = no playoffs = no batflip. IMO it was worth the risk. Norris wasn't a can't miss prospect.

At the time of the trade I hated it for the reasons you already mentioned but looking back I've changed my mind. At the time we were trotting out trash like Scott Copeland and god knows what else every 5th day. As soon as we made the trade the rotation stabilized and we went on that ridiculous run. It's a difficult task to determine what exactly the financial benefit of the Price trade was in the long-run but I definitely feel like it boosted the team's morale and made it an easy decision for guys like Estrada to want to resign. I know a lot of people will say we won because our team was just good but I truly believe that the momentum started by the Price trade fostered a winning environment for that season and the following one. Now do I think that AA's methods are sustainable? Hell f***ing no, but the Price trade is not one you'll ever hear me complain about.

Of course. He may have failed to shine, or succeeded in those chances, but we'll never know. That was the risk, we weren't getting Price without giving up something.

 

The trade was made to secure playoffs for that season, which worked. Even though we didn't win it all, none of us will ever forget the bat flip and one of the best innings ever.

It was a risk reward deal that AA wanted to walk out on, we were 2 games from a WS, had Price performed in the Post-Season, we all don't give a f***... not that bad a deal.

We all know that, it turned the city upside down... we were great, the f***ing Royals BABIP'd us to death, it was frustrating, but we were on our toes, for a reason.

 

Same goes for the Cleveland Series, we were out-scored by a few runs.(Great pitching, both sides) So close and great expectations, I feel it comes this year too.

AA wasn't paying for two months of Price, he was paying for two months of Price and a chance at the World Series and a long-term revenue boost.

 

If you're at that end of the win curve at the trade deadline, a good GM makes that trade 10 times out of 10 and accepts the risk of the prospects turning into stars.

Price was a monster in his two months in Toronto, but would they have missed the playoffs entirely without that deal? I think at worst they would have been a WC team with the Yankees winning the division.

 

If Norris breaks out, then yes, it will be painful. At least with Tulo they get 5 years of him (for better or worse). Two months of Price for a SP with six years of control left is a bit less justifiable to me. The Jays were .500 at the time of the trade, and while they were definitely underachieving, it's not like they were the Cubs of 2016 that were running away with the division. They were 7 games back with two months to go. It was a huge risk that paid off short-term.

Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal spoke with Red Sox manager John Farrell and got some interesting dish: MLB may very well crack down on phantom disabled list visits.

 

You know how this has worked in the past: a player who is not exactly in the team’s plans at the moment, but who cannot be sent down — say, a veteran or a Rule 5 draftee — may suddenly find himself “injured” and placed on the DL. This happens even if he’s not injured, as it allows the club to call up a reliever or something. Major League Baseball has, generally, turned a blind eye to that.

 

Now, however, the minimum stay on the disabled list has been reduced from 15 days to 10 days. This creates an even greater incentive to stash an uninjured player on the DL in the name of roster flexibility. Say a fifth starter who may have his next start skipped due to a day off. As he “convalesces,” the club gets an extra reliever or something.

 

Not so fast, reports MacPherson:

 

No official word has come down, but Red Sox manager John Farrell said his understanding is that Major League Baseball plans to crack down on the so-called “phantom DL” and require increased documentation for injuries requiring DL stints. That would make it more difficult for teams to manipulate roster rules by abusing the disabled list.

 

MacPherson talks about how a team like Boston, with a lot of veterans who do not have options, could theoretically abuse the new shorter DL. Farrell talks about MLB signaling to him that they will investigate DL stints more thoroughly to make sure they’re not bogus.

 

I’m sure everyone will adjust. And probably a lot faster than it takes all of us to stop calling it the 15-day DL.
