TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 31, 2016 Posted December 31, 2016 We haven't had a good debate in a while. So lets talk about this. Anthony Alford's house burned down. His family is raising money with a goal of $20K. https://www.gofundme.com/rf-rising-from-the-ashes?rcid=c305369af4724ae396dd1fff0289c136 Some teammates have donated. Gibby gave $1500, Tinnish donated, Marc Hulet...JB Woodman too. His agent gave $1000. I have no issue with Go Fund Me's as a rule. But this is a professional athlete that received a nice bonus (which might be gone through legal) and his agent alone instead of giving 1/20th of the amount could easily raise this $20K. It could be done internally within baseball without fans giving their $10 and $20 amounts. Or on the other hand this makes fans and friends feel better about doing their part. I feel bad about anyone that goes through a fire. Glad to hear everyone was safe. But is it right or wrong for a professional athlete to partake in this sort of fundraising? My initial thought was wrong for the reasons I gave above but if this was a non prospect who got a smaller bonus I'd probably give myself.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 31, 2016 Author Posted December 31, 2016 As someone who has never been through a fire: wouldn't insurance cover this? American's in Mississippi is my likely answer here. I know of one person that had insurance and it didn't cover a lot of the contents they were claiming. Just furniture and items listed when they purchased the insurance.

Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted December 31, 2016 Posted December 31, 2016 Sorry to hear that they had to go through that. I do think there is grounds for debate over how well off one needs to be before it isn't right to be accepting charity. I really don't know where that line is though.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 31, 2016 Posted December 31, 2016 I don't like gofundme at all... But lets not pretend Alford actually makes any kind of money playing baseball.
4thOFan Verified Member Posted December 31, 2016 Posted December 31, 2016 Wrong! This guy got a $700k signing bonus and soon to be millionaire! Sucks that his family lost everything but this is an absolute joke!
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 31, 2016 Author Posted December 31, 2016 I don't like gofundme at all... But lets not pretend Alford actually makes any kind of money playing baseball. Never claimed he did. And it's very possible his entire bonus was spent on his legal troubles. But his agent is a Multi Millionaire who could drop $20K without any issue. I'm really not sure what side I land on here. I know I reacted when I saw Alford retweet it himself.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 31, 2016 Posted December 31, 2016 Think it depends on who the athlete. His signing bonus wasn't that much relatively speaking and even though he's a top prospect he could flame out. I'd draw the line with a Major League player. Lots of people in the south don't even have house insurance. I was shocked when I went to Florida and even middle class people didn't have insurance. If they didn't have insurance thats really tough.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted December 31, 2016 Posted December 31, 2016 Alford could tear his knee up in Spring and never make any money playing Baseball again. Thread is aids. I suggest shut the f*** up unless your family lost everything in a fire. Insurance can't replace pictures and irreplaceable items.

He retweeted it because maybe its for his family not him? Nobody is obligated to donate.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 31, 2016 Posted December 31, 2016 Biggest thing for me would be if Alford has success and makes a lot of money is that he pays it forward like others did to him.

Jesus, that's crazy. I can't imagine the stress of an uninsured home.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 31, 2016 Posted December 31, 2016 Jesus, that's crazy. I can't imagine the stress of an uninsured home. Hurricanes happen all the time too. (Why home insurance there is very expensive)
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 1, 2017 Posted January 1, 2017 Jesus, that's crazy. I can't imagine the stress of an uninsured home. Americans seem to have that mentality in general. Same thing with health insurance. Certainly feel bad for his family, but I'm not a big fan of this kind of fundraising. Surely some company would have given him a special sponsorship deal or something for the $20k to help his family out, and he makes some appearances for them or something.

We all know who he is but I doubt many non-Jays fans know who Anthony Alford is. Perhaps a company around his hometown would be willing.

Losing everything in a house fire is an incredible horrible thing - no matter how much money you have. Nobody is debating that...it's whether a pro athletes should be looking for charity $.

Perhaps a company around his hometown would be willing. Well, he's basically a top 100 prospect. You'd think a company would perhaps be willing to take a gamble on 20k in return for Alford agreeing to do a certain number of promotions for them in the future (say).

I've seen someone start a go fund me after he shorted a penny stock hard and lose a ton of money lol so the bar is set pretty low
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted January 1, 2017 Posted January 1, 2017 Well if you can't afford insurance on the house I'm not sure you should get the house, but that's beside the point. GoFundMe and donations in general are very popular these days. I mean there are corporations that ask for donations why wouldn't someone, especially who can get ballplayers of one of the biggest fanbases to share, do that as well? I see your point about the agent paying $20K but why would he. Instead of him footing the bill multiple people can chip in and whoever has money and chooses to donate will
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 1, 2017 Posted January 1, 2017 Did Anthony Alford even start the go fund me? Nope. Bailey E Alford did.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 1, 2017 Posted January 1, 2017 Almost raised 10k in 10 hours. The family should have the goal by Monday.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 1, 2017 Posted January 1, 2017 Nope. Bailey E Alford did. I think that's his wife.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 1, 2017 Posted January 1, 2017 I think that's his wife. oh lol. Tim Leiper with 500!
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted January 1, 2017 Posted January 1, 2017 I think that's his wife. Why is this guy married... He's like 22.
FrozenRopes Verified Member Posted January 1, 2017 Posted January 1, 2017 You don't like it, don't give. To say anything otherwise is stupid. No one knows the circumstances surrounding what happened. I won't give but I sure wont say there is a problem with it. f***, if people would pay my kids tuitions via gofundme that would be great.

You are correct that I don't know the circumstances, nor do I claim to. I found out about this through a friend who is a club promoter that often represents the Jays players, and immediately this started a debate among a group of friends...I enjoy debate and thought I'd bring it to the board. For Alford it's an interesting position as he is a public figure. If I saw Alford this spring dropping $5,000 at a club, I'd probably judge him. Same way if I saw his wife at the Jays Care events I'd likely think back to this and say to myself "at least they are giving back". BB is correct and Alford will likely be judged by how he gives back, but he is setting himself up for some bad PR as well.
