MLBTR:

One key element of the current collective bargaining talks is whether there will be any change to the number of players who can be carried on a roster. Negotiations are entering their final phases with the current agreement set to expire on the first of December.

There has reportedly already been consideration of going from 25 to 26 players on the active roster. (Here’s our story from two weeks back; the reporting came via Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.) And that concept is still under discussion even as the time nears for the league and the MLB player’s association to wrap up talks, per Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

There’s little question that the 26th man would be a boon to the player’s union, though MLBTR contributor Ryan Spilborghs has argued that it would be beneficial for teams as well. Balancing the cost of thirty new MLB salaries, sources tell Rosenthal, could come in part from new limitations on the size of the active roster in September.

Currently, of course, organizations can utilize anyone on their 40-man roster during the month of September, as Spilborghs also recently discussed. The new rule under consideration might limit clubs to 28 players for any given game during the final full month of the season, with additional provisions allowing that group to be modified — but not every single day.

It’s easy to see the merit in paring back the strange rule that significantly changes the game beginning on September 1. There likely wouldn’t be much of an impact on the transactional world, and it’s hard to imagine any fans taking issue. Adding a 26th man for the full season, though, might shake things up a bit. It would potentially reduce the exposure of players to serious injury, make it easier for clubs to employ specialized players at the major league level, and make the Rule 5 draft a more feasible means of snaring young talent.

I'm all for an extra roster spot for most of the year, but limiting September callups

Not keen on any major increase to the luxury tax threshold

Qualifying offer system has to change

Arbitration rules seem pretty good

Need to consolidate the North American and international drafts

What other significant items are up for negotiation?

Need to consolidate the North American and international drafts

They arent going to combine anytime soon. MLB players are already protesting the idea of an international draft.

So, at best they'll have to push to even get a draft in the first place, let alone combine them huh

I love the 25-man active roster in September idea. I mean it can still be exploited a little because you won't dress the other 4 starters. But atleast it won't be an unlimited roster.

I want the no Trade to clause removed from all contracts or if they keep it the player can only be limited to 3 teams max

If he wants more after that he pays for it every year for the length of the contract think 50,000 dollars min to start. Have it pooled and divide among the teams complied on that list to use freely as they wish. Think this would benifit small market teams most!

MLBPA would love this idea, bro. :P

I wouldn't mind making September callups go up to 30, but having to name a 25 man roster each day (but they should make it that anyone who was a starter in the last 4 days has to be on it, otherwise the non-starting starting pitchers would always be off).

There counter would be if accepted a floor is established and put in place that moves up to reflect a percentage of The major league maximum payroll before penalties win win !!!

I'd like to see the 25 man increased until April 30th (26 or 27 early in the season). Down to 30 in September is fine, but still excessive.

I'd like to see minor league players in the low levels that didn't get millions in bonuses earn enough money to actually call it at least minimum wage

The arguments for a 26 man roster make a lot of sense. In general I think extra usage of specialized players will generate extra excitement.

I hate the idea of restricting reliever usage in any way, let teams use their players as they see fit.

I'm finding myself split on the issue of September call ups. There are valid arguments for and against it.

If they are annoyed by the pitching changes. Take away warm up pitches. These guys are already warm in the bullpen. Why do they run out and get to throw more. Give them 1 or 2 and get the game going. Don't even need to go to a commercial break.

So split screen commercials? They do that in soccer right?

That would work as well. They want the game to speed up but also want as much advertising as possible. Unless they actually want to limit pitching changes to try create more offence. They need to decide what they want lol. Hamstringing a manager seems stupid though. I hope they never do that.

I think it's just about speeding the game up... I'm fine how it is, but SC commercials would make sense.

Then they should work in Ticket sales or concession stands on the side. This is the CBA, they are never going to fight for people not on the 40 man. Just won't happen.

Yeah I know, pipe dreams. Too bad a minor league union would never work

I'd like to see hazing like what was going on in the Rangers complex agreed upon.

Players get the right to forcibly circle jerk rookies in exchange for the international draft? They can't turn that down, I don't think.
