I read that we were mentioned as one of the teams showing interest in Beltran, but I have to assume this is old news from prior to the Morales signing that has just been leaked now. Beltran and Morales should both be used primarily in the DH spot at this point, I can't see investing in both.

Is it weird the Blue Jays haven't made the Morales signing official? Its been 5 days now and they announce the Gurriel signing Monday when they the reports came out hours after each other. Maybe something came up in the physical?

Not really. Could be where he's located, same thing happened with the Marlins trade. Reyes was on vacation somewhere and they couldn't make it official until after they got the physical done.

Beltran can play the OF. Heck, he's be an upgrade over Saunders and Bautista. Pretty perfect Jose replacement really. It does seems a little weird to force one of him or Morales to play the field every day but the appeal here is the short commitment.

Fair enough. He's long been rumored to not want to play in Toronto for awhile so there might not be much to this. I like Beltran less if he won't play the OF at all and had to glue him permanently to DH. Even if Morales holds up at 1B, the loss of flexibility would be a drag.

Over the last five years Beltran has been a worse defensive Outfielder than Bautista or Saunders

Morales is almost certainly a better defender at 1B than Beltran in the OF. He might not even be below average.

Saunders defensive numbers were decent before his injury. We should give him another go especially if he can be had at a bargain like 2/16

Well if they DID sign someone like Beltran to DH full time, it would pretty much kill the whole Smoak is getting significant playing at 1B time notion.

 

We heard some speculation that one of the thing the Jays liked about Morales was that he's used to DHing and shouldn't press at the plate the way some players do when they focus exclusively on hitting. Would be ironic if it turned out that what they actually liked about Morales is that he was an underrated 1B unfairly perceived as a DH only player.

They really aren't interested in everyone though.

 

They are avoiding guys asking for more than 3 years (other than maybe EE). They are avoiding guys with draft pick compensation. It sort of narrows down the potential pool of talent they can get.

Only one of them has to play in the field at a time, I can live with that. We have plus defense at all the key positions, I'm not that worried about 1B and corner OF.
