In a platoon with Upton he wouldn't be a horrible piece depending on acquisition cost. Has had some strong seasons vs RHP and is basically Pillar vs LHP.

If the defense is closer to average than the metrics suggest then he could be a cheap middle order of the bat. He was 14th in the league in ISO last year, which would play well at the dome.

 

I'm not sure that I buy the defense argument, but I do believe that he's back to being a very good hitter. It wouldn't be a terrible move if the prospect cost is minimal.

If we take the LH platoon partner bit at face value, then the best fits would seem to be:

 

Reddick

Ethier (trade target)

Coghlan

Moss

 

All would likely provide plus offense and defense in the platoon role.

 

If we WANTED another lefty killer, Gutierrez would be a great target.

They do want left handed hitters. The point was Bruce and upton platoon. Upton hits lefties and Bruce hits righties. Upton is almost free but Bruce isn't cheap for what he is

The part I don't really get is they talked about wanting to change the team composition and ways to score. Bruce doesn't do that. The only thing he has going for him in that regards is that he's left handed. I'd rather just resign Saunders if we're going that route, as I think a full offseason might improve his defense a little.

It's possible that FieldFX based metrics (which use actual measurements) rate Bruce's defense much different than what Fangraphs does (which uses generalized averages). I'm not sure that's the case, but it is a possibility.

Have you heard anything about when the general public might get access to fieldFX stats? I think that it would change the way we look at a lot of players. These huge year to year discrepancies in UZR would probably balance out in most cases.

 

No (and frankly we may never get access). It would be a lot of fun to play around with though.

 

As far as UZR, more than likely it would allow us to determine some injuries to players that weren't necessarily reported.
