Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 If he is a new Izturis he could provide around 2 WAR for 4 or 5 years providing millions in surplus value. And there's a real chance he could be significantly better than that. Best thing about this deal is that at $3m a year he could be a total bust and it would never prevent us from signing someone for budget reasons. His older brother Yulieski got $47.5m on a 5 year deal from the Astros, and while he was MLB ready, he's considered the lesser talent. At the time of the Astros signing a lot of press speculation was that one benefit was it giving them a great chance of signing Lourdes. TLDR - I love this signing.

Laika Community Moderator Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 I don't understand how the conversation landed on Izturis. Lourdes is nothing like him. He's like 8 inches taller and he has louder tools across the board haha.

Laika Community Moderator Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 I think people are mistaking the "more sought after of the two" to mean better. That's true. Gurriel likely is the better player now and short-term but Gurriel Jr. could feasibly have gotten the bigger contract because of age, potential position, etc.

Didn't mean to compare their playing style.

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 If that's accurate, where does Urena play, assuming he's not dealt? AAA. Urena is a plus defender at SS. He does not take a back seat to Gurriel if they are on the same team. I would move Gurrs to 2B if that happens.

Prime Yuliesky would probably get the biggest international contract ever. He was long sought after while he was playing in Cuba. This might not necessarily be the case anymore, but saying that the younger brother is the greater talent is probably inaccurate.

People seem to reading too much into his numbers with the Astros this year. It's a tiny sample, the guy just moved to the US and probably is adjusting to the culture of everything.

The younger brother isn't in that level of talent.

Mittens87 Verified Member Posted November 13, 2016 Posted November 13, 2016 Some scouting report said that he was struggling before 2015 but the last 2 years has improving a lot, said on the industriales Cuban team they were on together JR might have been the second best player. Who knows what he can turn into. Said he's on about the level of any mid first round draft pick with lots of potential but obviously not proven mlb talent
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted November 13, 2016 Posted November 13, 2016 Nothing to see here. Powerless utility guy who can't speak english qué?

The guy hit .500 over 224 PAs in 2015. Next highest average was .371 (Lourdes was 15th at .344). He was the best even when he left.
