Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 They could probably get a nice prospect for Colon at the deadline Could they though? I don't think any contender is giving up a B level prospect for half a season of the oldest player in baseball, who is mostly just an above-average innings eater.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 I hate Jeff Blair more than anyone - yet even I don't see the issue with this article. I still believe it was a calculated risk that didn't work out. That trade was awful from the beginning. Now we get to watch Syndergaard dominate Baseball for the next decade.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 Braves are doing what good rebuilding teams do. Have some average vets soak up innings while trying to develop pitching in the minors. It's not like they'd be using that money to sign stars.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 I like both of these signings from a Braves perspective. Moving into a new park they need to not be the worst team in the league. Colon and Dickey should be able to soak up some innings for them so there's no need to rush their pitching prospects and allows them more time for evaluation.

It doesn't really matter how old a player is when it's a rental. Colon isn't great but he's a solid bet for a team desperate for pitching. Beltran got a big pretty big haul last year and he's really nothing special at this stage in his career

Yeah and I can list off about 10 failed starting pitchers who were superior prospects to Syndergaard in 2013. TDA has is all but written off as an impact player already. The Jays had payroll restrictions and were making a push. You have to be pretty short sighted not to see what and why they were doing it. It didn't work out, that's baseball. King Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 This is the first time I've ever seen someone argue in favour of the Dickey trade.

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 Told my 8 year old son today "RA Dickey was signed by the Atlanta Braves" thinking after 4 years of watching him pitch he might have some emotional attachment, as he does to many of the Jays. His answer..."yeah!"
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 This is the first time I've ever seen someone argue in favour of the Dickey trade. I've made this argument too. I feel like once the Jays made the foolish Marlins trade, they backed themselves against the wall because they still didn't have enough. So from that perspective it made sense. The real problem was the whole direction of that off-season.

BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 Bye Dickey, take your pet monkey with you! Don't make me call PETA on ya! Lol
Inklink Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 WTF they signed Colon too. Any other ancient pitchers available?
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 Tyler Flowers catching RA Dickey? What are you thinking Atlanta..
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 WTF they signed Colon too. Any other ancient pitchers available? They're filling out the age gap with reliable arms, nothing to see here... excellent job, imo.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 Tyler Flowers catching RA Dickey? What are you thinking Atlanta.. Flowers is one of the better receivers in baseball. If it fails, they sign a Thole/Kratz or Hanigan.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 Same. Didn't like the value going out the door, but I see why AA did it. Thank you...

intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2016 Author Posted November 12, 2016 WTF they signed Colon too. Any other ancient pitchers available? I heard they were trying to get in touch with Jamie Moyer.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 I actually thought the Dickey trade was more defensible than the big trade that happened before it (Marlins deal), but yeah, it still sucked. Not his fault though. He didn't make the trade.
