Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted October 7, 2016 Posted October 7, 2016 The Jays camera obviously did. I get that you guys may not have had the best angles, but when I pause it and see his foot on the base and the ball isn't in the glove, how can you expect any other conclusion? There isn't any question Spanky. He was safe, period. If you want to call me an outright liar after years of being honest with you then you can go f*** yourself. You don't deserve any further respect from me if that's your stance. Maybe you just have piss-poor vision and need to see an optometrist.

o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted October 7, 2016 Posted October 7, 2016 They need to have modern day tech guys who know the rules and video doing the decision making in the Review booth. Having a fossil of an ump, who wants more than anything to scratch the balls of his fellow umps on the field, instead of trying to get the correct call.

The other problem is that I don't think it's always the same guys in the replay room. There needs to be some consistency.

There needs to be some consistency. they rotate through the most physically unable umps to keep them working. you know the umps always try to make each other look good. they are a tight knit group. players still know that if they upstage some umps they will catch s*** from all their buddies for a long time going forward.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted October 7, 2016 Posted October 7, 2016 They say that this is supposed to make baseball fairer for all teams, but I'm not seeing it. If it's going to continue to be used as a tool to further MLB's agenda then I'd rather not have it at all. On a play as conclusive as the Pillar hit, the explanation that they 'thought he was out' isn't acceptable. They have the angle that shows Pillar's foot on the base and the ball not in the glove, it's not like this is up for debate. What gives?
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted October 7, 2016 Posted October 7, 2016 The answer is still incredibly simple, when it goes to replay, the replay officials simply review the play and make the call as to what they see, completely ignoring what the umpires call was. If its definitive, they make the call. If its inconclusive, the call goes to the offense. Ignoring the call on the field eliminates this issue. It will never happen, but that's the solution. And secondly, have a the umpire make a quick clarification announcement like the refs in football or hockey do. I think it is fine the way it is. Default goes to the call on the field unless there is conclusive evidence otherwise. The umpire still has the best angle (at least when it comes to base path decisions) even if it's with human eyes. they rotate through the most physically unable umps to keep them working. you know the umps always try to make each other look good. they are a tight knit group. players still know that if they upstage some umps they will catch s*** from all their buddies for a long time going forward. Ugh. Maybe I have too much faith in humanity, but I'm more confident that maybe, just maybe, umpires will base their decisions to uphold the integrity of MLB. You know, their employer and the major league of the sport that they love so much that they decided to make a career out of trying their best to uphold that integrity. And not just to make their buddies on the field look good, when it is a commonly held understanding that judging plays with human eyes is incredibly difficult. There's no shame in being wrong and having a call overturned every once in a while.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted October 7, 2016 Posted October 7, 2016 Replay (the way it's supposed to be called) went in the Jays favour today.
