ChrisS Verified Member Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 His ability as a pinch runner isn't limited to SB's..... Not to mention its not a guarantee Lucroy gets him anyway. You have a guy on with that kind of speed and things can happen.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 More relaxed for this game/series (now at least) than the WC. I feel after this strange season and a rough SEPT like we are playing with house money right now, and anything is possible. I'm confident in our rotation, less so in our pen, D and offense. But I know that they have all the talent they need to win, if they bring it. jays had 2 weeks where they couldn't catch, throw or hit, the pitching has been amazing this year. everyone thought it would be the offense that would get them to the post season and it wasn't. The D has been outstanding since the end of the west coast trip. just need the offense to get it's foot on the gas and go. If the jays offense kicks into gear this series will fall the jays way easily, but if the offense doesn't it will be a rough series for the jays.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 I don't understand how they can leave Pompey off the roster.... that's not what I take away from that list. I just saw that there was no Thole or Dickey and I'm happy.
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 His ability as a pinch runner isn't limited to SB's..... Agreed, the value of speed on the basepaths definitely goes beyond stealing bases.
guylaroche5 Verified Member Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 I really don't like Tepera and Feldman over Pompey. My guess is Gibby wants the extra arms in case Osuna can't pitch but this really f***s us late in the game if someone like Saunders or Navarro gets on base and we have no one to PR them for.
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 Agreed, the value of speed on the basepaths definitely goes beyond stealing bases. The sac fly run against Boston on Saturday arguably would not have happened with another runner. The guy's fast. But I understand a PR having way less value than another arm out of the pen.

intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 Not if 2 of those arms are Feldman and Tepera. Making outs on the other team might be more important, though. A pinch runner has pretty limited usage. And there's always the grim possibility that innings need to be eaten, though. I'd rather wear out Tepera down by five late than a higher leverage arm. Then again, there are off-days so this might be because the team is scared to use Osuna too.

Im trying to just have faith in this FO decision making, but I hate not having Pompey as a PR who can also go in and play adequate D later vs two scrub pen arms. Lucroy can throw but Pompey stole bases off Perez last post season. The guy is fast and the statscast on the BoSox game SF showed he hit 19 mph. That's a great weapon. OTOH we will likely have Upton as a PR sub option against RHP.

It would have been just as easy to split the difference keeping Pompey and one of the two pitchers.
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 Yeah I'd love to have him too. I'm just saying the decision makes sense considering the team is skittish about Osuna's health.

intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 Am I having a brain fart here or would anyone else keep Pompey/Goins over Barney? You need a back-up middle infielder though, and at least Barney can put up a decent AB so Goins is basically useless. The team also has five OFs rostered.
Bojangles Verified Member Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 Davidi just posted a lineup with Zeke in LF and leading off and Smoak playing 1B and hitting seventh. Then deleted it and said it was the wrong lineup.... You almost have to play Upton in left and Carrera in right Vs Hamels don't you?

I just hope they dont get stupid and use Stroman to pinch run. Last time he did he had a really awkward slide into second base. He might think he's still an athlete, but he's a pitcher now and isn't as sharp as he used to be running. not worth the risk
Bojangles Verified Member Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 Am I having a brain fart here or would anyone else keep Pompey/Goins over Barney? Barney has shown he can play 3B should anything happen to JD

West Texas Forever Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 Move Tulo ahead of Martin for f*** sakes.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 Am I having a brain fart here or would anyone else keep Pompey/Goins over Barney? I'd keep Barney over Goins. you can't compare to Pompey. Barney is the only infield bench player. I might have kept Goins instead of Tepera or Feldman. any game that is so gone to s*** that you would use Terpera or Feldman... you might as well use Goins or Barney to pitch. I'm more worried about only having 1 infield bench option more than I am about a pinch runner

jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 1. Carlos Gomez ® LF 2. Ian Desmond ® CF 3. Carlos Beltran (S) DH 4. Adrian Beltre ® 3B 5. Rougned Odor (L) 2B 6. Jonathan Lucroy ® C 7. Mitch Moreland (L) 1B 8. Elvis Andrus ® SS 9. Shin-Soo Choo (L) RF Wind 11 MPH In Why no Mazara I have no idea... of course, Bannister isn't exactly a smart manager. And Gomez is a downgrade over 2015 DeShields--who didn't even make the postseason roster. And Choo is just coming off a significant injury, and hasn't done much all season regardless.

Yeah I could understand why they wouldn't play Mazara against Happ, but you would think he'd be in against Estrada.

Governator Community Moderator Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 Line up looks good and no Navarro is a plus! But not bringing Pompey means our bench for this game is Saunders, Navarro, Smoak, & Barney. That is Fugly.
