vic city Verified Member Posted September 13, 2016 Posted September 13, 2016 What a horrible season. Yes, injuries have played a big part in it but Bautista's play has deteriorated at an alarming rate over the last couple of years. His defense was bad last year and when healthy this year, his offense has declined significantly. So what do you guys think he can realistically expect going into free agency? Especially considering that the team that signs him will have to give up their first round pick. This may have sounded crazy earlier in the year but is there a chance that he actually accepts his QO? I don't even think he's going to get 2 years at $20M. Who in their right mind would give up their 1st round pick for him at this point? Sucks to be Joey Bats. He was a f***in hero a year ago. Meanwhile EE is sitting pretty, showing him how it's done.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 13, 2016 Posted September 13, 2016 Not thread worthy and all... but...
vic city Verified Member Posted September 13, 2016 Author Posted September 13, 2016 He gets a QO... You wouldn't qualify him?
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 13, 2016 Posted September 13, 2016 You wouldn't qualify him? I would... "he gets a QO".
vic city Verified Member Posted September 13, 2016 Author Posted September 13, 2016 I would. Well what are you saying then? Obviously he gets a QO. Are you suggesting he'll accept?

vic city Verified Member Posted September 13, 2016 Author Posted September 13, 2016 Who cares at this point, if he does, so be it. I'd be ok with that. I was just wondering if anyone else thought he'd be offered anything better in free agency. I think it's unlikely at this point.
CBlake Verified Member Posted September 13, 2016 Posted September 13, 2016 I would. Funny thing is there was a time when a player like Joey at this stage of career could very likely be getting his best offer from Japan. There is no doubt Joey is an aging veteran but is there a 3 year deal at 75-90M somewhere out there for him?

If he gets offered a multi year deal for $20M per he'd take it and run. Not sure that deal exists though.

Edit: Keeping Edwin will be the Birds choice, something like Ortiz's contract at multiple years, should do it. Edited September 13, 2016 by Spanky99

I know GMs are crazy but this one seems like a no brainer to me. Stay away...

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 13, 2016 Posted September 13, 2016 Umm, QO You don't say...
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted September 13, 2016 Posted September 13, 2016 I would take Bautista back on a year deal without hesitation. His injury riddled season might make it affordable to bring both Jose and Edwin back. I don't think Edwin is going to get the type of money people are throwing out there. You just don't pay a DH 100M. It's not going to happen. I don't even think he gets Cespedes money. Will see though.

Well, I'd gladly take the draft pick for both of them. I'd hate to be the GM that goes all in on either one. How do you try to sell that to your fanbase? Eww..

At this point, though, I'm not sure the FO should even offer him a QO. I know I am in the minority there.

I would love them to sign Edwin for 3 years and Bautista for 1 year as a QO or similar (but Bautista likely walks if that's the best we do, so draft pick) There's no way they don't give them both qualifying offers. That's just due diligence. Edited September 13, 2016 by G-Snarls
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 13, 2016 Posted September 13, 2016 Bautista should still command something at least as good as the Beltran contract (3/45). At his age, he should absolutely take a 3 year deal rather than take the QO and try again next offseason.

Barring an injury, Jays will 100% offer Jose a QO, which he will certainly reject. And another team, will definitely pay him well. I think he'll get 4/70 and that will probably be a bargain. Yes, he's old and he's had a bad year, but he's still productive, and he's only one year removed from a .250/.377/.536 year with 40 HR and 4.5 WAR. And that's not even counting his ridiculous post-season heroics. Sad, how all you 'fans' forget so quickly all he has done for this franchise.
CHRIS Verified Member Posted September 13, 2016 Posted September 13, 2016 Sad, how all you 'fans' forget so quickly all he has done for this franchise. I don't think anyone forgets what he has done for this franchise, they're just trying to identify what he will likely be able to do for this franchise moving forward. Like most, I'd offer the QO, but would be leery of anything that's multiple years.

I think his ego is too big and he thinks he's worth $25M per though. I would not give Saunders a QO. He's been terrible lately.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted September 13, 2016 Posted September 13, 2016 The attached draft pick will make it difficult
BTS Community Moderator Posted September 13, 2016 Posted September 13, 2016 I think he gets 20+ per year on a 3-year deal and walks.
