The fact that Hill is so damn cheap is probably a big draw for the Jays. The terms of the Grilli and Upton trades suggest that adding players without increasing payroll is a priority (I'm assuming here that what Atkins was keeping under his vest was that the Jays aren't giving Melvin any money this year).

Hill could be worth a lot to his new team if there's an extension window attached to him. Maybe that's the angle the A's are using to get more than what the q.o would bring them?

I always get the rules mixed up. In the NFL you can't say you're interested in trading for a certain player to the media.

Maybe Hill figured that he could have a solid year in OK - pitchers ball park and knowing OK's habit to sell players knew that he wouldn't have to worry about a QO as he'd be traded. Try to max out a final contract after a good year + some w/ boston.

I think that depends how big of an outbid it was. That being said, it's not a stretch to think that Hill was using Oakland as a launching pad to more money but he doesn't have to do that if he's offered the kind of good money he was looking for in the first place. Anyways, I get what you're saying. If he was going to take a cheap deal, it wasn't going to be from Toronto.

I'm a big Canucks fan and Jim Benning got fined earlier this summer for making comments about Stamkos and Subban. Stamkos was going to be UFA in a matter of days and Subban was signed long term. So one would have potentially been signed as a free agent and one would have to be traded for. Either way, I don't believe you can make comments like that about any player under contract with another team.
