Praise the Shatkins! I like these guys. I had grown so frustrated with Anthopolous holding on to every bargain-bin acquisition in hopes that they just might pan out. JoJo Reyes anyone?

To the people annoyed that Tepera is the "replacement": don't worry. This is a temporary move. It's almost a certainty that they'll beef up the bullpen before the trade deadline.

Can't see this guy helping us at all down the stretch, and you'd have to be crazy to trust him in any sort of high leverage situation... May as well just cut our losses cause I doubt we'll be able to get anything in return.

Good call bud. So much derp in the responses here, as the eye test is non existent.

Thanks Kelly. Yeah, I was a little surprised at a response or 2... Especially the " K...." in a huge font reply. I really didn't think it was that controversial of an idea:confused:

Not really a good call on my part though as I was frustrated that it hadn't happened already. Seemed like a no-brainer at that point but it's reassuring that Shapiro and Atkins aren't gonna fuss around with someone who isn't producing... Big name or not.

It'll be interesting to see who they target before the deadline. If you move Sanchez to the pen, it certainly addresses a lot of the bullpen uncertainties but then it leaves a big hole in the rotation. Either way, there should be a lot of fun things to talk about coming up.

I don't understand why if he clears waivers jays would release him

Just assign him to Buffalo and have him help the bisons

Because he'll refuse any assignment and look for a contract with another team.

Fun facts of the day.

Jays Bullpen is tied for 5th in the MLB with a xFIP- of 93.

6th in SIERA.

9th in xFIP

...Yeah it would be nice to get another piece, but the BP has been fine.

Can you be anymore of such an attention whore?

I could be. Would you like that bitch?

Interesting. Not that suprising. Where do they sit on blowing leads and allowing inherited runners to score?

That does seem to be their biggest problem. I think Chavez has come in about 4 or 5 times this year with a couple of guys on base only to promptly give up a bases clearing double or long-ball. Gibbons needs to realize he's the kind of guy you can only bring in during a clean inning.

Perhaps, but Chavez always seems to give it up when it hurts the most. For as solid as the pen numbers are, there really isn't anyone I feel all that comfortable with after Osuna and maybe Grilli. Grilli's been a fantastic pick-up who I'm glad to admit that I was wrong about. He really seems re-energized after coming to the Jays. Hard to blame him though, It's gotta be tough to get amped up pitching for a team as brutal as the Braves.

It feels so weird and foreign to see the Braves being the dumpster fire of the league. I never thought I'd see the day.

I don't know. I guess i could look it up. But those stats have little predictive value. So who cares.

The point is the BP is good.

Sorry wouldn't a pitcher pitch differently with runners on base then without. Seems to me that would be a circumstantial factor

I don't really understand why it's so toxic to you that people have different opinions.

In terms of advanced stats, I think the closest we have to that is WPA (win probability added), where the Jays' bullpen is 21st at -0.07. We are also 21st in RE24 http://www.fangraphs.com/library/misc/re24/

Basically, the BP has been bad when you consider context. All in all, we've probably had an average bullpen with above average contribution from the parts that pitchers can control, but below average production considering leverage i.e. one too many key hits given up in high leverage spots.

I get that logic. I think we have blown 14-15 leads and allowed 40+ of 140 ish inherited runners to score. Just trying to juxtapose against the numbers you posted to see whether we have been really unlucky and/or some of our relievers just suck in high leverage. The O's, NYY and BoSox all have pretty good pens too.

Thanks Org. That's what I was wondering. The numbers JFL19 posted are good and tell one story, but I don't think the pen has been that solid. Mind you giving up 3 leads in OAK probably skewed my views recently. Hopefully those positive numbers to date produce better results going forward.

Yeah man totally, there's two sides to this story as usual. I think where j4l19 is coming from here is that even though they've been poor in high leverage spots, some more important stats (for predictive purposes) have been better. Thus, if they keep pitching as they have, in theory, the context based occurrences will even out in the future and they will be better in higher leverage. That's my take on it at least.

I'm gonna agree with Org's assessment here. The BP has been around average overall, but in high leverage situations we suck. I see lots of people here post things like "X should get a clean inning"... Well relievers jobs are supposed to provide relief for the pitcher going out. Obviously I'm not talking about bases loaded and 0 or 1 out but I'm saying even in 2 outs with RISP our BP (notably Chavez and Storen) fail to get the first batter or two out which is unacceptable.

I think that's a solid take. Lets hope so.
