Terrible managing, terrible hitting with RISP, terrible pitching...its all becoming a theme...1 run loss

Other than Dickey's implosive 2nd inning, I don't recall anything being all that egregious (except Thole's baserunning derp). Lots of line drives went right into gloves, too, so.

This is ridiculous.

4 games back after today. Great job.

Uhh---Tampa/Baltimore is still going on. And don't assume an automatic win for the O's..

24-45 in one run games the last two years. The only team worse was the A's...until they beat us by 1 run the last two games.

It has been said that 1 run games are a true measure of manager performance

jays went streaking before the break, so far this series they have simply been caught with their pants down.

time to turn it around tomorrow with Happ on the mound.

If I did my math right, the Jays are 120-66 (.645) in all the non one run games since last year.

That's the crazy thing, how can a good team be so bad in close games? It makes sense for Oakland to have a bad record in one run games because they have been a bad team. I can't figure out an explanation for the Jays woeful record in 1-run games.

Maybe you're looking at it wrong. The Blue Jays have been very good the last two years. Beating them has been hard. Blowing them out has been very hard. Therefore, most of their losses are close games, because it's hard to blow them out. Most of their wins have been by multiple runs, because they've been really good.

This explains why the Jays record is good in blowouts, and why a lot of their losses are close. What doesn't make sense is why they don't win more one run games. It doesn't explain why when they do get involved in a one run game, that they almost always lose it. I don't know what explains it. Been goin on for years tho..

Poor bullpen management (last year mainly) and just a leaky bullpen in general (earlier this year especially) is part of it.

Terrible managing? Kris Davis killed us and we couldn't get a hit for the past 4 innings

Not starting Travis is just a terrible managerial decision. Then of course he left Dickey in a tad too long as well

Frequently scoring 5 runs in the top of the 9th to turn a 1-run game into a 6 run game might have something to do with it.

That wouldn't end up as a one run game though. In games that end up as a one run difference they lose such an absurdly high proportion. It's supposed to be mostly random but it's been going on such a long time.

That's my point. Would it make you happier if they weren't good enough to pile on and turn 1-run wins into blowout wins? Maybe they could add more blowout losses too, to cut down on 1-run losses.

Going on last year's record, 93-69.

Most excellent teams will lose 65ish games, so that's a guarantee. A poor 1-run record just means many of those losses will be very close. If a team could swing half of those losses into wins, you'd have a 100+ win juggernaut, which is an absurd thing to expect. A bad 1-run record for a good offense and good pitching staff with a great team record just means that even their losses are hard fought.

Last year the Jays lost just 41 games by more than 1-run. I believe the second-fewest in the league. They were really hard to blow out! Would everyone really be happier if some of those 1-run losses were 5-run losses? Better record in 1-run games!

Well, that's a slightly different thing. I wish they could win every game 15-0.

Is this team good enough? Those are the questions you have to start asking.
