Should we extend Dickey?

I have no idea why you think there's only a 1% chance a team offers him a 2 year $20M deal. I do doubt teams want to or will give up a comp pick for him, but the first statement is simply bizarre.

 

It was an exaggeration. Just wanted to say that there is a chance that he gets a 2 year deal somewhere but ZERO chance a team gives up a 1st rounder. You literally take everything literally.

Hear me out. I know we all hate watching him pitch, I know he's boring as f*** in interviews, I know we resent him because we traded Syndergaard to get him, and I know we all hate having Josh Thole on the roster.

 

But over the last calendar year, here are Dickey's numbers:

 

216 IP, 3.41 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, 2.43 K/BB, 9.4% SwStr

 

Granted, the FIP and xFIP paint a less flattering picture (4.41/4.55), but the same is true of Estrada and we all love him regardless. Objectively, Dickey's been an adequate, mid-rotation innings eater. It might actually make sense to extend Dickey for one year (plus an option, perhaps) for something in the vicinity of $8-10M, and given his situation, I think he'd probably be open to it. When you consider how sparse the free agent market for SP is this coming off-season, I think there's an argument to be made to bring him back for another year.

 

I like the idea. His low injury risk makes him basically a lock for 200 innings. As much as people hate him he's worth having around.

Literally going to be a 42 year old, inconsistent , one pitch pitcher who is walking and giving up HR's at career highs with an xFIP you would get from a replacement level pitcher who can't strike guys out with a BABIP that shows he is NOT unlucky and there are fans that want to extend this guy and eat up 10 million or so in funds next year...LMAO.

Jays have had a healthy rotation this year, that assumption shouldn't be made next year. Keeping Dickey at the right price and having Hutch plus one more affordable starting option still makes sense. You can always move Dickey to the long man role.

I'm not a huge fan of Dickey and to be honest would hate to see him back with the Jays, though I'd have no problem with it and like others mentioned it would be a safe move. Those 200 innings are valuable. Sure it's frustrating watching him every 5th day because you have no idea what you'll get, but he's capable of putting together good stretches of starts as we've seen in years past. Another 1 year/$10 million contract for 2017 wouldn't get me excited though at the same time from a baseball perspective, it would be nice insurance to have considering the Jays are familiar with Dickey and wouldn't require a multi-year commitment. As a No. 5 starter, you could do worse.

Yeah with the SP options out there this offseason and the lack of Jays pitching depth in the higher minors, it wouldn't shock me to see Atkins & Shapiro go the safe route as we've seen them so far in their tenure. Rather have something then be left with nothing next spring.

And that's all it should have cost. He would still be disliked. You go from a 2.xx ERA to 4.xx ERA you're going to have people dislike you.

I haven't been a fan from day one, but there was a lot of bad luck today. The two HBP sucked, but a lot of crappy hit balls in the right places.

There's a decent enough case to be made for letting him walk that you don't have to resort to things that don't really matter for him (xFIP and fWAR). He looks like much the same guy we've seen for years now: good for 200 IP of 4-4.25 ERA ball. If he doesn't decline, the package is worth like 2-3 wins.

Yes, he will. He's over 1 now, has 2.5 months left, and usually finishes strong. He's a virtual lock to be in the 1.5 to 2.5 range.
