DDTMatt Verified Member Posted July 5, 2016 Author Posted July 5, 2016 Preferably lefty pitching yes, but if there's a good deal for some valuable prospects, I say go for it too. Mostly because I think he's not coming back next year and they are fine without him this year.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 we say trade, bautista says no. the end Why would he say no? If we come to him and say we have a deal for him it obviously signals we're not going to be resigning him. Jose Bautista is a smart business man and knows the extra $$ he will get without the QO attached to him and plus any team that trades for him would be a contender so it's not like he's going to be going to the Braves or some crap team out of it. I doubt he would give up millions of $$ just so he can stay in Toronto for a few extra months instead of playing for another contender.
Sorrow Verified Member Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 Welcome Matt. I think we should keep Bautista and qualify him at the end of the season - get the draft pick , acquire a LOOGY through a similiar trade like the Grilli one. If you could move Bautista for a prospect that might be worth more than a supplemental first round pick it's probably worth it. Bautista's basically on pace for a 1.5-2 win season, his bat while good hasn't been elite this year and his defense is horrendous at this point. I don't think Carrera is an answer for even this season, and with Pompey being so damn injury prone this season you probably can't really afford to move him because you have no clear replacement.
jb22 Verified Member Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 There are a few reasons why I think (hope) that the Jays trade Jose: Why keep Edwin over Jose? 1. Chemistry: it's not hard to notice that the team looks more loose when he's not in the lineup, and they've been winning more as a result. Jays are 7-8 since Bautista got hurt.

Key22 Verified Member Posted July 9, 2016 Posted July 9, 2016 It's doubtful the Jays trade Jose. For one they're the wild card team and looking beastly right now. Because Jose is a rental that means every team in baseball who is not seriously in a playoff hunt will trade nothing for him. That only leaves playoff teams who would want him. Then if you are the Jays do you really want to make one of your competitors stronger? The Jays should be in go for it mode and Jose at this point is like adding a stat bat at the deadline back to the team's roster. I am pretty sure EE is going to be an excellent bat for the next 4 years and they should be trying to extend him. Saunders too. Get a draft pick for Jose. If you can get an elite closer(OR a number 2 starter), a top 50 pitching prospect in the game, a top 100 prospect bat in a trade then I'd do it. Otherwise you try to win now.
GreekFatAss Verified Member Posted July 9, 2016 Posted July 9, 2016 Not that I agree with trading Bautista, but to say he wouldn't accept a trade seems like a stretch. Jose made it public that he wants a big money contract from us or anyone else, so getting him to sign off on something that would increase his earning power would likely not take much effort. Bautista is a Jose fan first and not a Jays fan like us. (As he should be)
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2016 Posted July 9, 2016 How about we just go and get a pitcher, and try to win the world series.

I have no issue with him negotiating hard for the best deal he can get to provide for himself and his family. We would ALL do the same if we were in his shoes...which we aren't. Lots of ball players get hurt or ground up by the system before they ever make any big money and many just aren't of the elite talent level that Jose worked hard to become. As for being a team mate, based on the subjective evidence I see he is well liked by his team mates and a huge part of their machine.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2016 Posted July 9, 2016 People!!!!!!! A 35 year old RFer who is not able to play the outfield anymore, who's in his final year in his contract, in the middle of a poor season (by his standards) and injured for about a month doesn't get you jack on the market. No one is buying high on this guy we might as well hold on to him and hopes he changes his season around and says healthy, which he probably will

How does getting traded mid-season benefit Bautista in any way? He doesn't get a raise. He doesn't improve his playoff chances unless it's to the Cubs. He's still a free agent at the end of the year and would get the same contract regardless. He would have to pack up and move while working 6 and a half days a week. There's literally no incentive whatsoever for Bautista to accept a trade.
baloojayz Verified Member Posted July 9, 2016 Posted July 9, 2016 It's not like he's a clubhouse cancer so trading for MLB players would be pointless. If you trade Bautista for prospects you might as well trade Edwin and Donaldson as well. Not saying it's a good or bad option, but it makes little sense to trade JB and then hope to win the world series.

He would get a higher contract in theory due to not having the signing team lose a draft pick Edit: I think one team (Baltimore I think) wanted a player in Bautista's situation to pay them for losing a draft pick as a result of signing said player.

Jose would only ever agree to a trade to another contender, and the NL is likely out with his defensive shortcomings, that pretty much narrows it to clubs in the AL central and west.

I think the chance of him struggling on a new team initially ala Tulo would be weighing more heavily on his mind
