Manchester, NH - Melky Mesa homered and Dwight Smith Jr. drove in two runs but the Fisher Cats dropped a fifth straight game, falling 8-5 to Bowie at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium on Friday night.

Third baseman Tucker Nathans went 2-for-4 with a home run and five RBI for the Bay Sox, winners of six straight.

In the opener of a three-game series, the Fisher Cats started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Smith drew a two-out walk, Ryan Lavarnway doubled and Melky Mesa tripled to give New Hampshire the first two runs of the night.

Bowie put together a two-out rally in the top of the third inning to take the lead for good. Joey Terdoslavich (3-for-3, BB) doubled and scored on a single by Quincy Latimore. Nathans then homered to give the Baysox a 3-2 lead.

Nathans (2-for-4, HR, 5 RBI) ripped a three-run double in the top of the fourth inning as the Baysox pulled out to an 8-2 lead. They scored five times on six hits in the frame, chasing New Hampshire starter Jason Berken (1-6).

The Fisher Cats trimmed the lead to 8-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Roemon Fields and Jason Leblebijian drew walks and moved up on a wild pitch. Both scored on a double by Smith.

Mesa hit his fifth home run of the season, a tremendous shot onto the Samuel Adams Bar & Grill in the sixth inning to close to 8-5. But the Fisher Cats would draw no closer against the Bowie bullpen.

Jason Garcia (2-6) went the first five innings to earn the win for Bowie. Jason Stoffel worked a perfect ninth for his 12th save.

COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. - The West Michigan Whitecaps (35-23) banged out 19 hits, four by center fielder Jose Azocar, in an 11-3 romp over the Lansing Lugnuts (29-30) on Friday night at Fifth Third Ballpark.

It was the first 2016 meeting between the intrastate rivals, as well as the first of 11 meetings in the next 17 days.

The Whitecaps scored a run in the first inning before breaking the game open with a four-run third and a three-run fourth. West Michigan shortstop Leonardo Laffita supplied the biggest blows, smacking two-run singles in both frames.

Lugnuts starter Ryan Borucki (Loss, 2-3) allowed five runs on seven hits and three walks in three innings-plus. Reliever Josh DeGraaf gave up four runs on seven more hits in the next three innings, though he also struck out four straight batters between the fifth and sixth.

Patrick Murphy recorded the final six outs for the Lugnuts on his 21st birthday, reached for a Cam Gibson solo home run in the seventh and a Steven Fuentes RBI single in the eighth.

Gibson's homer was not only his first of the season, it was West Michigan's first home run at Fifth Third Ballpark in 2016.

Whitecaps All-Star Kyle Dowdy (Win, 3-1) tossed six innings, allowing two runs (one earned), walking one and striking out three.

Lansing's only offense came virtue of a Connor Panas RBI fielder's choice in the second inning, a Ryan Hissey RBI single in the sixth and Juan Kelly's sixth home run of the year in the ninth.

Both Hissey and Max Pentecost finished 2-for-4 in the loss for the Nuts.

The Lugnuts and Whitecaps reconvene at 7:00 p.m. Saturday, with right-hander Sean Reid-Foley (3-3, 3.18) starting opposite West Michigan right-hander Fernando Perez (1-1, 5.21).
