Wade Leblanc

As the summer continues to heat up, so does Wade LeBlanc.

Buffalo's veteran lefty fired 6.1 innings of scoreless ball Saturday night, mixing in five strikeouts to earn his team-leading fifth win of the year in the Herd's 3-0 victory in Toledo.

The 31-year-old threw 90 pitches and allowed just four hits before making way in the seventh for Bo Schultz, who came on in a leverage situation as part of his rehab assignment.

The Blue Jays' reliever hit 98 miles per hour on the gun before inducing a 6-4-3 double play to end the frame.

LeBlanc, now 4-0 on the road, has gone five consecutive starts without allowing an earned run -- a stretch of 33 innings.

The other half of the battle between two of the International League's top-five ERA starters was performed fairly well by Thad Weber.

But the Bisons got to Toledo's starter in the second inning as Jesus Montero and Darrell Ceciliani hit back-to-back singles to start the frame. Matt Dominguez then scorched a liner off of the wall in left-center field to bring home both runners, putting the Herd up 2-0.

Ceciliani went on to have his first three-hit game of 2016, finishing just a homerun shy of hitting for the cycle.

Weber went a full seven innings, giving up only the pair of runs while spreading out eight hits and three walks. The right-hander got himself out of a few jams, ultimately leaving eight Bisons on base.

The Herd capped the scoring with a lone run in the ninth off of reliever Logan Kensing.

A.J. Jimenez ripped a ground ball through the left side of the infield for a single and moved to second on a fielding error by second baseman Argenis Diaz. Andy Burns then cashed him in with an odd-looking double.

Buffalo's infielder squeaked a hit just inside the bag at third that Casey McGehee gave up on, as he thought the ball was fouled off of the foot of Burns. McGehee and the Mud Hens argued the hit to no avail, and the Bisons took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the ninth.

Ryan Tepera then used a double-play and a strikeout to complete the shutout. He fired 2.0 innings of one-hit relief to earn his fifth save of the season.

BISONS NOTES:

Wade LeBlanc, now at 62.2 innings, reclaimed his International League lead from teammate Scott Diamond…Jesus Montero extended his hit streak to eight games and is now the lone member of the Herd to be batting above the .300 mark at .302…Every Bisons batter reached base safely Saturday evening…A.J. Jimenez stopped both Toledo attempts to steal a base off of him and has now caught 11 of 35 this year.

MANCHESTER - The New Hampshire Fisher Cats made the most of their opportunities Saturday night, working a 3-1 win over the Reading Fightin Phils in front of a packed house of 7,639 at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.

The Fisher Cats (21-26) snapped a five-game losing streak and rode timely hitting throughout the game, evening up the four-game series against the visitors. Reading (33-16) took a lead in the top of the first but couldn't hang on, succumbing to a series of miscues and small-ball plays to drop the game. The crowd of 7,639 roared with every pitch, giving New Hampshire a big home-field advantage.

The Fightin Phils drew first blood against Fisher Cats starter Shane Dawson in the top of the first inning. Leadoff man Roman Quinn sliced a double to left field, and moved to third on a groundout by Jesmuel Valentin. Rhys Hoskins then hit a slow bouncer to first for an RBI groundout, scoring Quinn and giving Reading the 1-0 lead.

New Hampshire equalized in the bottom of the fourth against Reading starter Nick Pivetta. Ryan Lavarnway smashed a two-out double to deep left-center field, just barely missing a homer. Rowdy Tellez then laced a ground-rule double up the right field line to plate Lavarnway and tie the game 1-1.

The Fisher Cats surged into the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Ian Parmley dropped down a bunt single to lead off the frame, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jorge Flores. With two outs, Roemon Fields ripped a liner into the right center field gap for an RBI triple. Parmley easily scored, and the Fisher Cats assumed a 2-1 lead.

New Hampshire added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Jon Berti got aboard on a one-out single, and advanced to second when reliever Jeremy Bleich threw the ball away on a pickoff attempt. Dwight Smith, Jr. then rocketed a single off Bleich's leg into center field, scoring Berti and extending New Hampshire's lead to 3-1. The Fisher Cats bullpen held together in the ninth to preserve the lead and the win.

Dawson earned the win as he tossed six solid innings of one-run baseball, allowing one run on four hits and five walks. Colt Hynes threw 1.2 frames, surrendering just one hit to Reading batters for his first save. Murphy Smith fired 1.1 shutout innings with one hit against one strikeout for his second save.

The Fisher Cats and Fightin Phils will square off again Sunday evening, with lefty John Anderson starting for New Hampshire against Reading righty Ricardo Pinto. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m., and Bob Lipman and Charlie Sherman have the call on the Fisher Cats Radio Network starting at 5:45 p.m.

LANSING, Mich. - The South Bend Cubs (30-17) scored six runs in the fifth and eight more in the eighth, romping to a 17-3 Saturday night victory over the Lansing Lugnuts (24-23) at Four Winds Field.

Lugnuts starter Jon Harris (Loss, 3-1) entered the game with a 28-inning scoreless streak. He extended it to 30 1/3 innings before Donnie Dewees's RBI single snapped the streak in the third. It was the start of a rough night for Harris, who allowed nine hits, four walks and eight runs (seven earned) in just 4 1/3 innings.

Second baseman Gunnar Heidt (3-for-4) auspiciously led off the game with his team-high fourth home run of the year and added a two-out RBI double in the fifth inning, tying the score at 3-3. The latter blow came on the heels of a home run by Connor Panas, the left fielder's second longball of the year.

The floodgates opened shortly thereafter.

South Bend knocked Harris from the game three runs and one out into the fifth inning, and Ian Rice welcomed new reliever Josh DeGraaf with a first-pitch, three-run homer, giving the Cubs a commanding 9-3 lead. Rice finished the night with three runs scored, a walk, a double, two home runs and five runs batted in.

DeGraaf held the Cubs off the board in the sixth and seventh innings before South Bend put the game away against Gustavo Pierre and Dan Lietz in the eighth.

The first six batters all reached base off Pierre before a diving catch by center fielder Lane Thomas recorded the first out. Lietz entered and allowed two consecutive RBI singles, a run-scoring fielder's choice, and then committed a two-run throwing error to close the night in microcosm.

South Bend notched 19 hits in all, with at least one knock recorded by each member of the lineup and three apiece for Rice, Sutton Whiting, Daniel Spingola and Andrew Ely. The Cubs also drew eight walks, three by center fielder Eddy Martinez.

Cubs starter Preston Morrison (Win, 4-2) gave up three of the Lugnuts' four hits and all three runs, walking three and striking out six. Pedro Araujo, Kyle Miller and James Norwood followed with a scoreless inning each.

Lugnuts left-hander Angel Perdomo (2-1, 1.73) will start the third game of the four-game series, set for 7:05 p.m. Sunday, opposed by South Bend Cubs left-hander Carson Sands (5-0, 3.38).

The next Lugnuts home game is on Friday, June 3rd, a LAFCU Fireworks night against the Bowling Green Hot Rods. The weekend continues with Star Wars Night on Saturday, June 4th, also featuring postgame LAFCU Fireworks.
