In the old days they always did But not any more after analysis has shown that's not optimal Despite that, I *suspect* some players still see it as a prestigious thing. Bautista, despite being smart, could be one of those guys.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 I guess 1B is no longer a strict platoon.. It never was a strict platoon. Stevie Wonder could have seen Gibbons starting Colabello everyday. Shapiro/Atkins didn't. It is what it is.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 Where did Maddon hit Longoria? 2nd??
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 You know who would have been a good choice as leadoff hitter? John Jaso Instead we have Smoak for $3.9 Million
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 Where did Maddon hit Longoria? 2nd?? Pretty sure Longo was in the third or fourth spot pretty consistently. Cash has him glued to hitting third. I think Maddon's been using Bryant and Rizzo in 3/4 as well, depending.

In the old days (your thinking) the fastest guy hit first no matter how often they got on base. The best lineup would be going OBP from top to bottom.
KinofChaos Verified Member Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 Pillar leading off and colabello hitting against a righty..ugh.

But the gritty white guy with high socks is supposed to bat 2nd! Who am I supposed to put there then!!??!

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 #4 hitter has to be a big guy who strikes out a lot but hits for power
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 So: 1. Billy Hamilton 2. Hunter Pence or Dustin Pedroia 3. Joey Votto 4. Yoenis Cespedes Ideal top 4 by sterotype

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 Pillar will get hot soon, his babip is too low even with the popups. If he gets it back to a .315 OBP then this leadoff discussion is pretty inconsequential (our leadoff spot put up a .320 last year cumulatively), *unless* Saunders is going to be at .360 all year. Then Gibbons will probably change it anyway. Pillar's approach has definitely changed this year. Huge changes in swstr%, O-Swing %, contact %. I don't know if it's made him better or worse though. It's not like his selectivity is leading to walks. His swing looked really good in ST but lately it looks bad again. He's getting under the ball popping it up.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 His swing looked really good in ST but lately it looks bad again. He's getting under the ball popping it up. I don't think his swing has ever looked really good. He is a hacker who takes all kinds of different swings depending on where the ball he is chasing is. His 2015 93 wRC+ is probably his ceiling.
polar bear Verified Member Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 At this point, they are both dead to me. Put EE at first and get someone better in the line up. That's what I've been thinking,or maybe Bautista at first, and bring up an outfielder from Buffalo.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 Didn't someone post the link for that yesterday? Not that anyone other than you cares. He's simply trolling like he did with all of his sexual hard on and masturbation ******** as before, mate.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 If the Jays asked Bautista to lead off, I'm pretty sure he'd gladly do it. He understands analytics and certainly knows he'll get more AB's.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 So Blair just said Pillar played for like a month with a broken hand. Mostly August. Looking at splits he did have .603 OPS in Aug. Says Gibbons is giving him a shot at leadoff because he meets challenges but Gibby already said he's thinking about Saunders or Goins at leadoff vs. RHP. I was just going to post this, I near pissed myself when he mentioned Goins. The broken hand thing was posted earlier, we had zero depth last year, lol.

He's an even worse choice than Pillar
