Jays sign LHP Franklin Morales; 1 year, $2 mil. Tepera optioned to AAA

I'm fine with this as it now creates depth that losing Loup shortened.

If Loup was healthy Venditte/Tepera/Girodo wouldn't even be in the discussion until injury or poor performance replacement was needed.

I think all the pitchers we used yesterday didn't pass the eye test for me, doesn't really mean match considering most of them are far from being MLB ready and I'm not a scout.

I saw him about 4 times this spring. I like to this I have a decent eye too

Girodo didn't pass the eye test for me at all. Anyone else?

I really liked the movement on his pitches and I think he could work LHB hard but I wouldn't say I made any conclusive determination.

Woke up to this thread this am. Sips coffee. Smiles. Now I would like to read a similar thread regarding Carerra and a certain Italian or Canadian.

So what's the word on Morales? Seems like a competent pitcher unexciting lh middle reliever with decent splits (.275 career wOBA against LHH, non regressed of course because nobody has time for that).

Things might get crowded when Loup comes back but he might also be on a split contract and Loup does have options if he needs more time of if Morales flat out steals the job. The more I look at it, the more I think this is a nice aggressive win now move by the front office. I like the idea of spending money to plug the Loup hole no matter how long it is.

Oh yeah and I couldn't care less about a non asset like Tepera's feelings.

I would have liked taking a flyer on Sean Burnett I think.

Hes from Dunedin!

Honestly though how did Tepera even make this team with options is the big question. He certainly didn't pitch his way on the team. His performance in Montreal probably officially did him in. Hes lucky that place is huge and didn't surrender a couple of bombs.

Rex Brothers would be a good arm to take a flier on as AAA depth.

Dunno.. his walk totals say otherwise. Probably explains why he hasn't signed anywhere..

Its a dick move? Are you serious? I don't think a team has EVER won the World Series making sure to never hurt the feelings of any of their players.

Which part of Ryan Tepra has been DESTROYED by left handed hitters do you not understand. Yes it may be a SSS in the majors, but we are much better having a veteran pitcher who CAN get LH out. Especially one that contributed in the bullpen to the team that won the World Series last year.

Everyone loves Shapiro and Atkins because they make good baseball decisions. There were some who questioned their bullpen decision, this seems to rectify those questions.

Veteran depth at the Major League level AND AAA is what wins Championships.

Wtf? Yes it is a dick move to tell him he makes the opening day roster, then when he arrives at the team hotel the night before the home opener tell him he's sent to the minors.

Yes that is a dick move any way you spin it and your an ass if u don't agree.

Now whether he should have been on the team to begin with is another story. I agree with you that he obviously shouldn't have been. Mistake #1 was naming him to the team. Mistake #2 was booting him.

That's the nature of sports. If an opportunity comes up for a team to make itself better it should take it...whether it's the day before game one, before game 50, at the trade deadline, or in the off-season. Players all know how it works. It sucks for Tepera, but that's life, and there's nothing untoward that the Jays did. A dick moves makes it sound like they purposely screwed him over...and that's just not the case.

Yeah, really, the team doesn't owe any individual player anything. Pretty sure no one would be complaining about Smoakabello's feelings if the team somehow landed Votto.

We're not talking about a Votto level upgrade here. You are missing the point. Obviously its a business. But bottom line is, the kid gets told he's made the opening day team, would have excitedly called friends, family. Then the team lets him know after they arrive in Tampa for the opener that he's being demoted for overpaid trashbag Franklin f***ing Morales?

Why the f*** was Tepera named to the team if they were looking to scoop up a DFA'd loogy all along? Why not just never name him to the team, its not like he deserves it, he's Ryan f***ing Tepera!

Why the f*** didn't we just name Venditte to the team in the first place, as everyone seems to agree was the smarter decision, save the $2 million? How is that not the better move?

Answer me that Shapiro dickriders!

I said this earlier in the thread but I'm going to assume you didn't read it. Morales replaces Loup in the depth chart, if Loup wasn't injured no one in the Venditte, Tepera, Girodo, etc. pile is even in the discussion to make this team out of camp. This is a better move because now you have Venditte and company in AAA keeping depth for injury and performance reasons. This isn't hard to grasp and the fact that you're unable to come to that conclusion by yourself makes me feel bad for you.

I don't know what you're angry about.

I don't like Shapiro...and I ride no dick.

It sounds like your anger is misguided. You seem to be angry about Morales being signed because you think he's trash...not because Tepera got sent down last minute. If you're ok with Votto being added last minute and Smoak/Colabello getting the boot, then the concept of adding more talent, even if it's at the last minute, is ok with you.

Your belief that Morales isn't worthy of being here is a different conversation.

So at one point does an upgrade become too incremental that feelings should play a role in roster construction? Morales has some success vs. lefties, a niche the BP legitimately needs. One Tepera doesn't fill.

Why the f*** was Tepera named to the team if they were looking to scoop up a DFA'd loogy all along? Why not just never name him to the team, its not like he deserves it, he's Ryan f***ing Tepera!

Because until a deal is officially reached you don't leave a hole in your major league roster. And I don't think Morales didn't make the Brewers because he sucked; it's because they're a s***** rebuilding team and didn't see the need to pay a vet to do that job for them.

Why the f*** didn't we just name Venditte to the team in the first place, as everyone seems to agree was the smarter decision, save the $2 million? How is that not the better move?

Because clearly Venditte wasn't good enough to make even the 8th BP spot. It's 2 million -- clearly it's there to be spent, and if they decided to spend it it may mean Loup's injury is more concerning than before. Maybe they were willing to ride the MiL guys until Loup returns, but not anymore. Maybe they didn't want to miss out for the second time on a decent loogy who the Brewers gifted back to the market?

But even his friends and family know he sucks so they won't care either.

Pretty sure Tepera knew very well he was a stopgap until Loup was ready or a better option came along. He's has a couple of gigs with the big club already. I doubt he got excited.

TilsonBritoFan giving more coverage to Ryan Tepera then he's received in his mlb career. Bromance?

He's Tapera' older brother

Posted
I'm sure Tepera rather he gets named to the team then sent down than not make the team at all. He likely got a nice cheque out of it and for a player like him who barely has service time its a ton of money.

Tepera will have plenty of time with the Jays this year. Injuries will happen. Underperformance will happen. He'll be up, possibly before April is even through.

I'm sure Tepera knew that he wasn't sniffing an MLB appearance unless the score was lopsided.

I think you guys are downplaying how amazing it is to play in the majors.
