Trying to make him Liam Hendriks 2.0

He'd have to throw a heck of a lot harder.

Hendriks was only averaging 91 as a starter as well.

... and he threw a heck of a lot harder as a reliever.

thats my point? Jays think there is upside to Biagini as a reliever since he will be transitioning from a SP much like Hendriks did.

lol

I think he might be a good replacement in Hendriks' old back of the bullpen job but it's highly unlikely that he'll throw as hard or be as effective.

I would agree with that. I wasn't saying that he will become Liam Hendriks, more that the Jays hope he does lol.

I don't know he tops out at 95-96 as a starter. I think perhaps with the off-season program the Jays use, and one-inning stint may even throw harder than Liam. Most certainly great use of roster space, and 50K to potentially gain an asset. I like it a lot better than giving Ryan Madson 22 million over 3 years!

no.... hoping he can dish up some mop up innings, that's it

You mean like Hendriks did all season long?

Did you read the scouting report? I think he will throw as hard or harder, it is unlikely he will be as effective.

From what I've read (just to reiterate at point I made in the welcome threa, I'm still learning about sabermetrics) we should expect an uptick in velocity. My concern is that the extra reach has negative consequences for his command that seems to not be a strength.

Is that where your comment about effectiveness stems from?

Ben Nicholson-Smith said he had an average fastball and I was going off of that but you're right that the scouting report contradicts that.

Yes and no. I don't think he will be as effective as Liam Hendricks, for multiple reasons. Liam had 180 major league innings prior to 2015. Liam had "average" stuff as a starter with good command. When his velocity increased, he already had good command.

Your concerns of where Biagini's command will be if his velocity spikes is fair, I believe. He has not pitched above AA. That does not mean he will fail in the Majors, we won't know until he gets the chance.

Unfortunately Ben Nicholson-Smith didn't spend the five minutes King spent to find Biagini in the SF Giants prospects and read the scouting report. It's not like that's his job or anything. I can understand you assuming that a Jays reporter would report facts on the players they are reporting on.

Well average fastball might be accurate if you're talking about the overall command and velocity but I just took it to mean average velocity. Twitter doesn't really lend itself to nuance.

Hmmm. That's a very fair statement. I just don't consider 60 grade fastball and 50 command as "average". Though in this day and age of fastball velocity, it may be.

Well like I said, it's not a nuanced medium.

I just would guess that he didn't read that particular scouting report. He could have been quoting a Blue Jays source. I'll stop passing judgement. I'll tell you what his fastball is first time I see him pitch in ST.

According to Elliott the Jays were estatic at getting him in their slot. This makes me happy. :)
