Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 Well, the bench is currently: Goins Barney Thole Saunders Pompey Smoak Someone is getting shipped out eventually. Goins will be starting until Travis is ready (whenever that is).

Governator Community Moderator Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 If Goins is shipped, my gut tells me Gruber will sell his house and apply for an American Guest Workers Permit as the Ryan Goins fan club President.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 I mean obviously we had nothing in AAA. That's what the f***ing off-season is for. Did Shapiro expect us to be contending for a WS last year and stocking our AAA rotation at the same time? Just like when AA depletes the farm. Ya he traded Barreto and a bunch of s*** for the AL MVP. Then he just re-stocks the farm. He's done it before and probably would have done it again. I get that AA was a gunslinger and not always very frugal but people are talking about him like he's f***ing Dave Stewart at this point. I wonder if Shapiro makes the Donaldson trade last year. I wouldn't be surprised if he decided to hold on Lawrie and co. given his comments about roster construction.

I doubt he is even aware Donaldson is available....I think AA was persistent that's why the A's finally came to play.

Yeah thats true. I wondered that yesterday when the Dbacks made that terrible trade, if AA would of found a way to make a trade with them first since he is active with every GM.

Considering what we gave up, I think its safe to say AA was the only GM in the league that even knew Donaldson was available and he knew this because he was the reason why.
nextyear Verified Member Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 With Cliff Pennington gone to the Angels I think signing Darwin Barney is a very good move. Goins can fill in at 3rd, SS and 2B. Darwin Barney is excellent defensively at 2B and has won a gold glove. For me this makes a lot of sense; the Blue Jays now have Goins and Barney to fill in at 3rd, SS and 2B. Based on the Blue Jays injury situation at SS (Tulowitzki and Reyes were injured for many games) and 2B (Devon Travis was healthy for only 62 games) in 2015, the Blue Jays will need both.

Too bad he can;t hit for s***, but that's why he's a bench/depth piece.
JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 Not a bad signing depending on the money. I'd imagine it's not a huge sum (say $1M or less if that). He's a great glove and bench piece. Switch hitter counts too. He gives the team that MIF depth they needed, so it's one item off the check list, and they can head on to more pitching. Maybe we'll luck out and he'll hit a bit better this year. I really don't want to see a situation where both he and Goins are starting in the same game due to injury, or double header. Unless maybe we get a groundball pitcher who can match up against another teams better pitchers. I'm wondering how the Revere/Saunders situation will play out. Revere played decently, lacks power, could, if he gets it together, be an OK leadoff guy, plays nice D, but Saunders hows more power yet I wonder about his knee and if he can actually play.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 The Jays should be trading with any GM who values Harold Reynolds verbal diarrhea. Apparently John Hart took this advice
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 Offseason 2013-15: A candid debate over who will be the starting 2B/SS and backup 3B for about 60 games out of an excellent pool of Goins, Kawasaki, Izturis, Bonafacio, Valencia and Tolleson. Offseason 2016: People are wondering why sign Barney when the Jays have Goins as backup/AAA fodder. How times have changed for the better. There is nothing, nothing, NOTHING to complain or debate about this. Is Goins going to be on the 25-man come April? Will he be on the 40-man? Will Barney be on the 25-man roster? 40-man? Kawasaki? Yes? No? Who gives a s***. All marginal MLB players paid close to the league min who are interchangeable, and, barring injury to the starters *knock on wood* will be limited to 250 PA or less. This thread should be 100% dedicated to the fact that none of these guys are going to combine to get 1000+ PA in 2016 and we should be celebrating that fact.

If he continues to show the patience he did in the second half of 2015 I wouldn't be surprised to see him somewhere between 2-3 fWAR.

Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2015 Posted December 11, 2015 The Admin thinks Goins is a 2.5 WAR player over 600, brah! lol Good for him! Let's hope it happens, it can only be a boost for the team. You're missing one big caveat...if Goins is consistently used as a late inning defensive replacement (though with Travis and Tulo this doesn't really make a lot of sense), he could put up 0.5 WAR over maybe 100-150 PA which would translate to 2.5 over 600 simply because an abnormally high proportion of his playing time is spent on defense. I don't recall you saying the 600 PA have to take place in one year. Cheating rules.

Ryan Goins would have to be Andrelton Simmons to carry that kind of value. He's just not that good. I'm not chirping you but I wish people would just accept that Goins is a fine bench option and nothing more.
