This is interesting. The Rays did an amazing job of this last year taking SP not named Archer out of the game early. Since most pitchers struggle the 3rd time through the order they would take their starters out after 5 Innings because they knew a replacement level reliever was better than a SP the 3rd time though the order. Now is that the reason why the relief market has gone up this much? Possibly.

The reality is that unless payroll climbs over the 160-165 range its going to be difficult to build a championship contender for 2017. And so far, it looks like they haven't done a good job in maximizing wins in 2016. The goal has to be to win the division with the new wildcard format and right now the Red Sox look a decent amount better than the Blue Jays.

The reality is the team will be good next year, decent in 2017 depending what they do and likely terrible for a couple years after that.

And, despite what this fourm thinks (or at least some on it), that has nothing to do with Shapiro or Atkins

Cecil gonna get PAID next year. With a dominant year 8-10M per isn't out of reach.

O'Day got a 4 year ~$8MM AAV deal and he's older. I think Cecil will get closer to $10M. Maybe a 4/36 or osmething

I'd agree with that. The challenge for this FO is going to be how do we make the blue jays "great" in 2016 instead of just "good"

The "significant progress on filling one hole" was Barney lol

Lol the way he was talking, it was like he was talking about a Heyward type of free agent. Bwhahaa

Yeah he should be able to at least get the O'Day type deal if he repeats.

He's been a top ~20 reliever of better over the last 3 years, probably.

Easy to say in retrospect - wish they had extended his contract a year or two ago.

Even on a 10 year deal I think Heyward may not be worth it. For 4-5 years I expect him to continue to be valuable but it's not hard to expect his defense to fall off at age 30 and his base running.

Thats why you let him have an opt out clause after 3 or 4 years.

I don't know what everyone is expecting this off-season. Management has flat out said they're not trading prospects. And we know we have no money to spend. And we know there's no Donaldson style trade coming around the corner. So it's largely going to be reclamation projects and depth signings.

There's nothing particularly wrong with that. Our team is already great and has a much better rotation than the 1st half of last season, and project to have a better offense if Tulo and Travis stay healthy for the entire year.

We could afford to trade Revere or Pillar if the return is good, but I don't see Pompey getting shipped.

Then we won't win, the Jays won;t have a lineup this good again in a very long time, I mean we have Tulo, Donaldson, EE, bautista, on the same team...that's scary. It makes no sense to go conservative this offseason, because it won't get any better then this for awhile.

Yeah you don't want it to turn into a 2014 situation where they wasted a really good chance. I've got confidence Shapiro can do what is necessary even if we haven't seen it yet.

Not necessarily but it does not preclude that scenario. Rogers is a Canadian entity which means their figures are reflected in CDN$. Let's say Dec 2014 the USD$ for approx 140 million was the equivalent of CDN$ 161 million. The exchange rate has plummeted in that year so USD$ 140 million is now the equivalent of CDN$ 189 million. There you have a 28 million increase yet the figure some fans will hear about is the USD$ amount which has not changed. The payroll did increase from the entity's point of view and it hurts to know that the Jays are at a disadvantage because of the exchange position but that is a reality for the organization.

I think it's the negativity.

The Jays had to have more than an increase in 30 million profit from last year to this year though, no?

I guess if you go by opening day payroll its been increased by around 10 Million USD but it is still the same as it was in 2014.

BLUE JAYS PAYROLLS

Year 25-man Opening Day 40-man Year End (rank)

2015 $125,915,800 $ ( )

2014 $137,177,700 $135,435,701 (10)

2013 $119,277,800 $125,879,791 ( 9)

2012 $ 83,739,200 $ 92,133,335 (17)

The Jays had to fill a few holes in both the starting rotation and in the BP with no money so they had to do the best they could. They still have to figure out how they are going to approach the extensions of at least two big players - Encarnacion - no contract talks after spring training starts and Bautista's position both of which will be substantial amounts. Depending on how they are doing at the AS break they may need money to spend at that time as well. They are definitely in a bad place this off-season so expecting some big moves is just highly unlikely from my perspective.

They had money. It's just that they spent most of it on the thoroughly unsexy (but possibly shrewd) signings of Happ and Estrada.

I don't think followthelight is being negative, but rather realistic. Obviously we have a good team but a few quality pieces are missing in order to be a legitimate WS contender. We won't have the same opportunity to compete in 2017 with the fact that both JB/EE could leave us.

Anyways it's still early so hopefully Shapiro gets us another quality arm.

Seems like he always takes the negative outlook regardless of situation though. If he's who I think he is, he's been doing this for about a decade.

Thats's horribly in-accurate, I am often positive where it warrants it also it is nothing wrong with being a pessimist, there is no law against that no? Learn to respect differing opinions.

Exactly, it's all I am saying, it will be much harder after this year.

You're also condescending.
