But seriously just offering him contract knowing he would get more money elsewhere just seems like a waste of time.

Ya, he would have come here for 7/217. I dont mind that we didn't make an offer if we didn't want to reach the numbers he was going to get.

What do you tell him? Ya we'll give you 5 years 140 mil?

You gotta pay someone eventually. Would be nice to overpay for an elite starter over a guy like Happ to be mediocre. I guess we should be prepared to watch Donaldson walk because he will get 250+m his free agent year.

Yeah, same. Price would have come here if we had offered something comparable to Boston's offer I'm sure, but that was never in the cards.

According to David Price's agent. He wanted to come back to Toronto. Was shocked not to receive an offer. That's pretty depressing.

Well the thing is, if they're not going to offer something competitive they maybe shouldn't offer anything. He wasn't going to take a discount to sign here, and even if he was the offer probably would've been an embarrassing low ball like we saw with Delgado in 2004.

Is anyone really surprised. And if they are...why?

You don't have to give 200+ million dollar contracts (in today's dollars) eventually, no.

I don't see any reason why an agent is going to burn bridges with other clubs by disclosing this in the open. Seems someone has sour grapes.

You can call it sour grapes from their perspective its basically the Blue Jays saying we didn't really want you and you're aren't worth it. When other teams were more than willing to give him his desired demands. Obviously the Red Sox blew the doors off but its not like they were the only team going into the 200m range.

You're right, from the Blue Jays perspective he wasn't worth 7/217 million (hence why they didn't offer it)... what are you even complaining about?

You're upset that they didnt offer him a contract he would have rejected, that seems smart to me

You missed the point completely. He is worth it if someone else is willing to pay it. If you sign him to that contract he has four great years of the 7 and we win a world series. You wouldn't be happy?

It's worth it to Boston, not us. People value things differently, including in baseball. Look up winner's curse to understand the simple concept

Sure, I would be. I'd also be happy if we didn't sign him and won a world series as well and I didn't have to watch 3 crap years of Price.

I wouldn't be happy if we signed him and he ended up not being worth what he got paid, and we're sitting in 2018 or whatever with a fifth of our payroll committed to an ace. Teams with more money can take more risks (this is clearly observable in how they operate).

Wow, this is right up there with "We got raped." You're that kid that jumped off the bridge when Little Johnny did too, aren't you?

This is how the sports world works unfortunately. I would love to not see massive contracts but I also don't want to be a treadmill team. If we had the prospect depth maybe we could do it the old fashion way but that's not the case.

Would you trade JA Happ (12) and Estrada (15) for Price?

I would, we could have offered him 30 mill per for 5 years.

Lets see if Price gets more wins than JA plus Marco.

Yep. Why insult him by giving him a 5 year 150M offer, there's no point. It's way too risky to give a 30 year old fastball pitcher 7 years and 200+M.

There's no way to gurantee a World Series. In fact any of the 10 teams that make it to the playoffs year in and year out can win the World Series and I wouldn't be surprised. The playoffs are a crapshoot. Even with Price the odds are still more likely than not to lose.

Look at the 2006 Cardinals, 2014 Giants, 2015 Royals etc.

Its not my fault people took that out of context. But no I'm fine with this contract. I would rather take a risk to be in dance than to never get invited to the dance at all. If you think thats stupid fine. If you disagree that's awesome. At the end of the day I don't give a f*** what you think. I want to win and not give 10+ million multi-year contracts to pieces of s*** like J.A. Happ.

You make absolutely no sense...

We made the ALCS last year, and are definitely one of the best teams going into this year. We also have zero huge contracts...

How the sports world works? Baseball is the only sport where you can even have contracts this large in North America and if history has taught anything, it's that you don't need the massive contracts to win. Interestingly enough that's a main discussion point of this forum in general, which I believe you read quite regularly so I'm surprised you haven't picked that up yet...

Nobody took anything you said out of context, you're whining about us not offering a contract that would have been rejected then stating (almost unbelievably) that because Boston offered it he must be worth it

I'm not whining I'm pissed off at the decisions this organization makes. I'm allowed to be pissed off. I'm allowed to not agree with it. So don't tell me what I'm doing.

More evidence of whining right here. This is actually something you would expect a teenage girl to say

You don't know what whining is. I'm allowed to be on the other side. Just because it isn't the popular opinion. Either way I'm done with pointless conversation. It's absolutely irrelevant at the end of the day.

1. Took what out of context?

2. Idk what you're rambling about but you literally just said "He is worth it if someone is willing to pay it." Discuss.

David Price is worth it, that's not the question. The problem is, the Blue Jays are only committed to a 130-140m payroll, THAT'S the problem.

I think he is saying a player is worth what the market dictates for him, in other words capitalism. Its about 7 million more than I thought but he pretty much got what he was projected to get

1. Donaldon comments. I wasn't ready to s*** on Lawrie like everyone else was. I was initially upset with the trade because I didn't have the full details and was thinking we got raped. As in that is the only possible way Oakland would trade us Donaldson with four years of control. People automatically took that out of context and jumped down my throat. I was actually excited to acquire Donaldson. I was blown away we didn't include our top pitching prospects. But people only harped on one point and quoted the posts that they wanted to have fun with. I still get s*** about it but never once did I actually mean we got raped.

2. In my opinion yes David Price is worth 200M and this market absolutely. Would have loved to see him back with this core. Would have been fanf***ingtastic.
