When you're paying $82M for the services of a catcher in his mid 30's, you f***ing ride him into the ground. Russell Martin should be begging for retirement and reaching for a cane at the end of 2019. And hopefully with a smile on his face, since he'll have a bunch of rings by then.

Yer dumn.

sample size of 85 plate appearances lol

that article needs to DIAF

it's only possible use is as inspiration for doing a proper WOWY on whether or not Dickey actually makes his catchers suck at hitting. Even if he does, it strikes me as more likely to be a timing thing than an injury thing. Catching the knuckleball could maybe mess up your timing for hitting. And if that's the case then you still might as well throw Martin out there because he's your best defensive catcher.

But when you look at all the factors I just don't see a backup catcher out there that makes it worthwhile when you look at all the factors.

-Dickey is better with Thole behind the plate than Martin as Thole is the better framer for the knuckleball

-Martin is better offensively on days he isn't catching Dickey even if it was a small sample its really all we have to go by

-Higher chance Martin gets hurt/banged up catching Dickey

When you weigh all those factors is there a backup catcher out there that is worth it? You said you want Martin catching as much as possible anyways so you don't really need a good backup catcher. I'd rather spend an extra 1-2 million on a bullpen arm but thats my opinion.

No, it's not. When your sample size is limited you don't just accept it as truth because that's all you have - you regress to the mean heavily.

I agree, about the catcher situation, and yes, save money for something more proactive.

Are you mirroring this off injury? If not, who cares, or we should've signed Navvy? Our offense can take care of an injury.

Oh wait, you're correct, that's a dumn sample.

No, he'd be fine I guess

I bring him up a lot, because he's caught Dickey, and the man himself said he could, great framer and a better stick, he'd provide similar WAR at the tiny sample of involvement easily, as Navvy did.

Kratz is weird. Everything we know suggests at least a competent backup but he's never really been given a chance. Do players still slip through the cracks?

They must, it doesn't make sense?

Is Kratz a good target considering he's 35 now? I'd be fine with a minor league deal but I'm not sure he'd want to do that.

So Thole> Kratz

And of course he would at a gig.

If you don't take into account the knuckleball I would think Kratz is a bit better. The platoon difference might make Thole more attractive considering how RH heavy the Jays lineup is but we are splitting hairs about a player that hopefully sees less than 40 games.

f*** the platoon, that isn't happening, Kratz has a much better bat and he's catching Dickey only, splits don't matter, he's Martin's day off.

Did you know we have an ignore feature on this site? I've had him ignored for like a year and I never have to read the stupid s*** he constantly posts unless a dickfart such as yourself decides to quote him for all to see.

Russell can't play all 162, so he needs some days off. Making those days off be Dickey days just makes perfect sense. If Dickey throws 32 games, let Thole catch 25 of them, let Russ catch one every once in a while, so he stays on top of it and come playoff time, we don't need to risk throwing out Thole in a game of that magnitude.
