Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 Gabe Kapler is vying for the LA field manager position and would also be on the radar for our GM spot? Talk about hands in many pies. I love pie.

saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 I'll give AA props for the Wells trade and the JD trade. But let's be real: the Napoli, Marlins and Mets trades were abysmal. In the wake of Price's playoff meltdown and his probable exit in free agency, that trade isn't looking so hot either. More often than not, AA was the sucker that allowed the rest of the league to swindle him out of all our prospects. seriously f*** off...Devon Travis, Tulo, Stroman, Estrada, Osuna....get a new f***ing login you twit
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 Doesn't justify re-signing him. If you don't think generating revenue isn't a criteria for being re-signed you're a fool.

I think he grouped in drafting and development into his list of great AA moves. Off-topic, but I don't think Shapiro would draft Stroman since analytics suggest a pitcher his size won't last as a starter.

metafour Verified Member Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 Off-topic, but I don't think Shapiro would draft Stroman since analytics suggest a pitcher his size won't last as a starter. Danny Salazar is 6-feet, 185 pounds. He's actually significantly less muscular than Stroman, which would make him an even bigger threat to "wear down". And its not "analytics" which suggest that smaller pitchers won't last as starters. That is purely traditional "scouting". Analytics tell you that if a guy puts up the required metrics, it doesn't matter if he's 5'7 or 6'7. It is traditional scouting which is enamored with "tall, strong pitchers", or "guys that look like athletes", etc.

That said, Stro is 5'8 so that's a difference of 4 inches plus whatever advantage is gained by that larger frame. Edited October 30, 2015 by THANOS

reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 Ben Cherington is apparently teaching at a university or something this year, but you wonder if he's on the list of potential interviewees?

I'm pretty sure they suggest that height is irrelevant when evaluating a pitcher. There is no evidence to suggest that shorter pitchers perform worse, or have worse stamina (the data would probably be skewed anyways since shorter pitchers are typically not given the same opportunities due to this misconception). This is purely a scouting narrative.

It's a better idea than bringing back JP Ricciardi.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 I'd like Manny Acta but I'm really happy as long as they replace Gibbons with someone who is aware of how good Liam Hendriks is.

The best thing is that Shapiro will know, and if Sanchez is kept, he'll have his handpicked coaches try to change him into a strikeout pitcher. They'll have their work cut out for them though.

Analytics would favor Stroman, not hurt him. Shapiro wouldn't value Sanchez, for example. Stroman? He absolutely would.

Do you think he'll try and turn him back into the strikeout pitcher he was in the minors? http://i.snag.gy/M1o1z.jpg Averaging over 10 K/9 until he was called up. Sounds like he was given poor advice?

Sounds like he was given poor advice? I remember hearing a interview after he came back from Pete Walker saying how encouraged they were with the groundballs Stroman was getting and its not all about strikeouts. I don't know know if its a philosophical thing where they feel GB pitchers are better in the RC. As far as his K/9, meh not to concerned from a 27 IP sample size. He still has his great mix of pitches so the K's will come soon again me thinks.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted October 30, 2015 Author Posted October 30, 2015 He's posted 157.2 innings of 7.36/1.94/0.51. I think we can expect a couple more dingers, a touch more walks, and a maybe a bit less strikeouts, but honestly, his career numbers aren't that far off imo. Maybe 7/2.2/0.7 or something? #LightskinMidgetDoc

Why can't he do both? Guys like Carrasco and Kluber have good groundball rates and high K rates.
