RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 I think that so many people have complained about this one move it deserves its own thread. With Pillar at second and 2 down Gibby had to make a move for an injured Donaldson. He decided to pinch hit Carrera over Colabello Navarro and others. I simply cannot find an answer for this. Suppose that the reasoning was that he might need Cola later in the game. Perhaps. But when we look at his bench we will see that a Cola pinch hit later in the game was just not possible. With no more infielders Pennington and Goins would have to remain in the game. So the only legitimate candidate that Cola could have pinched hit for was Smoak against a LHP. In that case Navarro was always there. I think Gibby messed up here and simply got out managed. Carrera is not a very good hitter and that showed in the at bat. Rangers took Gallardo out of the game after this, and this was really the turning point. A hit there and Bautista gets an at bat with a chance to tie or take the lead
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 Gibby always messes up. Been proven before and will be again, hopefully after the World Series victory.
JFD Old-Timey Member Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 Gibbons is an ******* plain and simple.

Plus Cola is very susceptible to hitting into a double play, and I think Revere was on first and less than 2 outs at that point. Plus it meant we could have used Cola later in the game if the opportunity came up. Gibbons knows what he's doing.

CHRIS Verified Member Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 You're not going to use Navarro in the 5th inning and burn your only backup catcher. Even less likely, when the emergency catcher is the guy being replaced as well.

Nothing wrong with this move. Yeah Navarro is only an option IF Donaldson is still in the game and can act as the emergency catcher. Once you take Donaldson out of the lineup, you basically take out Navarro too. Any other player and it would have been fine. That being said Navarro isn't really better than Cola for pinch hitting anyways (at least I don't think so).
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 Carrera is a LH hitter, maybe he has better numbers against Gallardo. There's just no way that Carrera has accumulated a significant sample against Gallardo. I'd be shocked if he even has 10 PAs.
