TheHurl Site Manager Posted January 31, 2019 Posted January 31, 2019 Is his career over because he sucks? or because of the injuries he sustained? he was never going to have an MLB career but he'd get lots of opportunities to be paid for baseball on his name alone. Can't throw a ball still, so I'd assume can't swing a bat either. Capel had a shot to make the bigs at some point.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted January 31, 2019 Posted January 31, 2019 Kacy Clemens career is over after his run-in with bouncers at a Houston bar on New Years Eve. Connor Capel (who is in the Cards org) suffered a fractured skull. Neither were intoxicated and are suing for $200k and are fighting to get the bar shutdown. It's pretty hard to imagine a scenario where a bouncer fracturing the skull of a patron is justified short of a weapon being flourished.

I once had diarrhea for a month. The main benefit of this lawsuit for Clemens will be a convenient context to explain his failure to make it in baseball.

It might be posturing for the lawsuit but that what I read today is that his career is done. So Mr. Lawyer considering what we are used to hearing for numbers in U.S. lawsuits, why is the number on this suit seeming so low? I mean Capel could argue that he is a top 30 prospect for the Cards. Or can you not project future earnings that way?

It's $200k to $1M - that is a very big number for some some bumps and scrapes and hurt feelings (Clemens). The press release says both players are reporting to spring training in a couple of weeks. I would guess it's not an astronomical USA style number because the lawyer knows they don't have substantial or career threatening injuries. The trial would take forever so if they file now, and then Capel finds out his skull fracture caused a hematoma that ruined his vision and his hit tool, his lawyer could maybe do something to increase the claim amount.

Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 31, 2019 Posted January 31, 2019 I don't know how Jansen is ranked outside the top 100, especially compared to 19 year old pitching prospects and crap like that. He's hit the s*** out of the ball the past two seasons and in 100 big league ABs he looked very good. From all the pitch framing metrics I've seen he appears to be league average. Defensive reports aren't glowing but he appears to be acceptable back there. Steamer has him pegged for 2.6 WAR in 100 games next year. To me he has a high floor and ceiling. How do you rank a guy like that outside of the Top 30 or so? Criminally underrated. Could you post the listing, including the just missed, thanks? Who has ESPN access? Can you post his history of top 100's just to see if Law is terrible or not. http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/10334094/complete-archive-keith-law-ranking-top-100-prospects-mlb Lmao I knew something like this was coming Please, lol.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted February 1, 2019 Posted February 1, 2019 Please, lol. I tried posting the archive earlier but I couldn't access it. I'll try and get Law's Top 100 up tonight or tomorrow.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted February 1, 2019 Posted February 1, 2019 Norm Chouinard (Connecticut): Got my Prospect Handbook Tuesday. One of the best days of the year. If I could somehow force you to do so, how would you rank Vlad Jr, Soto, Ohtani, and Acuna at this point? Kyle Glaser: We ranked Acuna and Ohtani ahead of Vlad Jr. last year and I would still do that today. Soto is interesting to throw into that mix. Behind Acuna and Ohtani, and my first thought is to leave Vlad ahead, but Soto is lefthanded and is better than a 1B/DH long-term. It's interesting. I'm not sure I feel confident on a Vlad Jr. vs Soto answer

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted February 1, 2019 Posted February 1, 2019 Don't disagree with any of that.... Except that Ohtani was considered a prospect... Ohtani was 23. Don't really have an issue with him being considered a prospect, regardless of his experience in Japan.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted February 1, 2019 Posted February 1, 2019 Ohtani was 23. Don't really have an issue with him being considered a prospect, regardless of his experience in Japan. Does that translate into you agreeing that a player in their first year, even if say a 28 yr old established All-Star in Japan should be eligible for ROY?
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted February 1, 2019 Posted February 1, 2019 Does that translate into you agreeing that a player in their first year, even if say a 28 yr old established All-Star in Japan should be eligible for ROY? Yeah, I don't have a big issue with them being eligible, although I don't really care either way. Regardless Ohtani was the same age as normal prospects breaking into the league, so I have no issues with him being considered a prospect.

Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted February 1, 2019 Posted February 1, 2019 He was 23, man. I know Othani was, I am just asking if it is only age that is his deciding factor in general or if it is first year...

What's the cut off for IFA's from the NPB as rookie eligible, I don't think Kikuchi's available is he?

Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 1, 2019 Posted February 1, 2019 I know Othani was, I am just asking if it is only age that is his deciding factor in general or if it is first year... Sorry, I thought cause of his age, is what he meant, apparently not, lol.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 1, 2019 Posted February 1, 2019 I didn't think there was one, but maybe there is. I know they lowered it.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted February 1, 2019 Posted February 1, 2019 I know they lowered it. This is what MLB says about rookie status: Determining rookie status: A player shall be considered a rookie unless, during a previous season or seasons, he has (a) exceeded 130 at-bats or 50 innings pitched in the Major Leagues; or ( accumulated more than 45 days on the active roster of a Major League club or clubs during the period of 25-player limit (excluding time in the military service and time on the disabled list).
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 1, 2019 Posted February 1, 2019 This is what MLB says about rookie status: Sure, I'm talking about players coming from the NPB. I think Suzuki was the last guy that won it at his age, I'm almost positive they lowered it. I can't find s***, lol. *checked for a whopping minute* Also, holy f***, Ichiro's my age, lol.

I think Suzuki was the last guy that won it at his age, I'm almost positive they lowered it. I'm 99% sure there's no distinction on foreign leagues, and no age limits. The formal definition of a rookie certainly doesn't have one.
