Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 20, 2018 Posted December 20, 2018 Can we power rank , as starters, the arms atkins traded for ? merryweather, Thornton, Paulino, Perez , waguespack , copping. Who did I miss? And throw in SRF , borucki and panonne in as well . Thoughts? Borucki, SRF, Perez, then select the rest at random
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 20, 2018 Posted December 20, 2018 I don't think most people associate an 8% walk rate, 13% K rate guy as a swing first hacker. Tercet saw him twice and both times...first pitch hack. Take your stats and shove them.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted December 20, 2018 Posted December 20, 2018 Can we power rank , as starters, the arms atkins traded for ? merryweather, Thornton, Paulino, Perez , waguespack , copping. Who did I miss? And throw in SRF , borucki and panonne in as well . Thoughts? This is just my personal feeling/speculation(s), but I have a feeling (not quite 50-50% but close to it) that the power rankings would look something like: 1. SRF - highest upside of the bunch and showed some promise last season in a small sample despite exhibiting a lot of warts such as control issues and the like. Pure stuff is that of a #2, though I just can't see that happening. Let's hope he can improve his command and he turns into a #3, but you'd have to assume he could be effective in other, shorter-burst roles if he can't stop throwing (ten straight) balls. 2. Paulino - has the stuff to start if he can stay healthy and off the drugs (mmmkay?). "realistic" upside is #3 SP, or possible dominant late-inning arm. 3. Borucki - probably a #4/5 type SP, but hard to see his floor being much lower than that. 4. Merryweather - he's tough to nail down due to the TJ, but was throwing hard and seems to have good control of his deep arsenal of pitches. possible range of outcomes are #3 SP to what Thornton is below. 5. Thornton - could be a solid back-end starter, or long-man out of bullpen, or used as an effective post-opener. 6. Perez - probably an RP due to control issues, but upside is immense if he were to ever harness his stuff (but he probably doesn't and could end up a late-inning arm instead). 7. Waguespack - probably an RP, but might be a serviceable depth starter. 8. Pannone - probably an RP, as we saw he was more effective in that role last year. 9. Copping - strictly an RP.
King Old-Timey Member Posted December 20, 2018 Posted December 20, 2018 Hank: You’ve made fun of the fact that the Jays (and others) view their system differently than you do. Where approximately do you place them, and what are the major differences between what you think and what they think? Keith Law: To be clear, I’ve only made fun of the team’s own overly optimistic view of their system, and how sensitive Mark Shapiro was when I disagreed with them. I don’t have them top 5, or particularly close, but beyond that I’d prefer to wait until I have my actual rankings done. lol
tercet Verified Member Posted December 20, 2018 Posted December 20, 2018 Tercet saw him twice and both times...first pitch hack. Take your stats and shove them. Naw maybe 10 ABs, the perhiperals are nice, but he is a a 24 yr old swing-first undersized 2B/SS aka Ronald Torreyes. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out his future.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 20, 2018 Posted December 20, 2018 Tercet's top farm ratings mean about as much as Todd's top 177, but either way I look forward to him sending in his whole list.
tercet Verified Member Posted December 20, 2018 Posted December 20, 2018 Who the hell is Todd you guys talk about him so much, I spend like 15 min a week on this forum for since it transferred from bluejays.com

He often posts lists of his top 700 Jays prospects

FTR, this is the same guy that went against the industry and openly mocked people who thought Luis Severino would be a successful SP. I'm sure you're hitching your wagon to the correct horse, though.

Laika Community Moderator Posted December 20, 2018 Posted December 20, 2018 If Vlad is weighed properly Toronto is probably 5th. I could understand how if someone did not know how to value Vlad correctly they might end up confusing Toronto with maybe 3 other teams, which would have them perhaps as low as 8th. Toronto has a lot of mediocre depth (~40 FV prospects) though, so if someone prefers to ignore 40 FV prospects they might rank Toronto as low as 8th based on that as well. I think, all things considered, Toronto is probably 5th but in a tier clearly below those four other teams, being CWS, SDP, TBR, and ATL. This post was plagiarized from Fangraphs, like all of my opinions.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted December 20, 2018 Posted December 20, 2018 Has anyone actually met Tercet in person? Could he actually BE Keith Law?

TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 20, 2018 Posted December 20, 2018 Has anyone actually met Tercet in person? Could he actually BE Keith Law? Tercet is allowed in minor league stadiums and Atlanta being top 5 is the most egregious thing Laika has ever lifted from Fangraphs

He thought Cito Gaston and (99% of this forum agreed with him back in 09/10) was crazy for benching Travis Snider for journeyman Jose Bautista. Well gulp we were all wrong. Look most online prospect “gurus” are mostly just positive and not negative at all. Klaw is all over the spectrum and he has been around what 20 years? He is right/wrong on a lot of things during that time. I guess he isn’t as high on Bichette as others (as am I), most of our prospects are just meh outside of VGJ.

He’s 15 years older then me and I’m what 1 foot taller then him? He might have been at some of the AFL games that I saw a month ago but I didn’t sit in the scout area beside taking to Jackson McLellands parents for a few innings in one game.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 21, 2018 Posted December 21, 2018 Hate to say it: I agree with tercet. lol... calling a fringe 5 prospect a bust, really going out on a limb.

How is Pearson "meh"? How is Pardinho "meh"? Vlad, Bichette and Jansen alone should make you an easy top ten system. Jansen is being critically underrated for whatever reason. He's likely got a floor as an average full time catcher. That's huge. His ceiling is probably close to a Yadier Molina or Russell Martin with slightly lesser defense.
Todd Verified Member Posted December 21, 2018 Posted December 21, 2018 My new list will be coming out over the Christmas holidays. Some of you might be surprised by my list and some of you might say your usually b's. But I like the up s and downs of doing this. And some of you are finally on my side with some of the prospects.

jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 21, 2018 Posted December 21, 2018 Do you want to be GM of a Yahoo MLB dynasty team? Me and Todd were co managers in the BJMB home run contest and we did big things. I would highly recommend him.

Pearson and Pardinho are meh, and you are delusional if you think otherwise. Pardinho is a 17 yr old 5’8’’ pitcher in old short season ball with meh stuff. Why don’t you let me know the history of short pitchers with meh stuff. Pearson has thrown 1.2 innings above short season ball and was recently pretty mediocre over 20ip in the AFL. No one besides the Jays staff know what he is right now due to them seeing him pitch a lot in Dunedin facility games. But omg he throws 100mph and is high on a couple prospect lists I guess he is a lock to be the next stud. Come on boxcar you’ve been around long enough you should be able to notice obvious red flags / warts on enough prospects and be able to make realistic but not delusional predictions of their future success. But go ahead and flame me because like everyone else because I predict a player sucks/not a superstar. My guesses I’d say will probably be 80% of the time a true mlb career outcome. The problem is that most of this forum always thinks of the 20% chance outcome of every player, in which they improve in multiple areas and reach their true ceiling.
