So who will be the better catcher in the future McGuire or Pentecost?

 

McGuire the better catcher. There's a chance Pentecost never catches a major league game.

That's tough. McGuire could end up what Thole was before he imploded and Pentecost might not be a catcher. If we're going for an impact player I'd gamble on Pentecosts high end over McGuires.

Pentecost was considered a well rounded player who had 50(ish) tools across the board.

 

The bottom line was "he's more athletic than a typical catcher."

 

Even if he can never catch full time, I wonder if he can still carve out some kind of big league ceiling as a 60 hit 50 power player at some other position?

Well maybe defense wasn't his strength exactly but the fact that he was a safe bet to stick at the position was considered a strength if that makes more sense.

If he could add a decent amount of power then he could be a 5 WAR player. Pentecost's chances of being a 5 WAR player are probably smaller, as he won't be as good defensively.

Absolutely. If Pentecosts bat is amazing but his D sucks he'll move to a different position. If McGuires offense sucks, but, defensively he's awesome he'll probably be a low end starter or back up.

Thats a fair point. Reese already has elite defence and that alone can make him go a long way. Pentecost's value drops a lot if he cant stay at catcher. We'll see what happens I guess

I dont know if he will have a 60 hit tool, but it could happen. Power is a question mark though he has shown some promise in that department this season.

 

Pentecost is likely to have some role in the big leagues with his hit tool even if he cant stay as a catcher, maybe corner outfielder?

I like Danny Jansen though he is definitely less hyped than the other two. The injuries are concerning and the power hasn't shown up in full season ball yet. Hopefully next season is his breakout year. Still young enough.

Yeah true. Though I am not a big believer in him as a hitter. Just my opinion. Like you said though, he still has age on his side.

The power not showing up is the bigger problem i think, it was promising at the lower levels but has completely dissapeared. Having said that, hsi overall numbers are actually not bad, a 95+ wRC from a 21 year old catcher, it isn't great but its good enough to still make him a serious prospect.

It's good to remember that some guys aren't even drafted yet at 21 year old. He's not a prospect I particularly like but he's not a write off by any means.

The jays have added a new prospect to the pool today

in Richard Reina.

And also added Ty Sterner.

He's 23 so once he and others hit 24 take them of

the prospects pool. After the june 2017 draft.

 

Interesting pick ups. Reina was decent as a starter last year though has been a disaster this season. Sterner a LHP with a good strikeout rate.
