I'm not saying Goins of the last month is going to stick but the reason why Gruber and me were willing to gamble on him is because when you look at the guy there is nothing to suggest he can't hit.

uhhh...wut

Goins the hitter is the type of hitter I like. Hits the pitches where they are pitched. I'm not sure if his BB % will be sustainable but I strongly believe we have a good hitter. He also admits that he's not looking for the HR, so I expect him to continue with this approach (as opposed to Pillar who feels like he's a 30 HR hitter)

I think pitchers are going to adjust by stop throwing him balls and start throwing a lot more strikes. If Going can actually stick he's going to show he can consistently do damage by hitting strikes. Just looking at his splits and seeing his batted ball profile he's only making hard contact 24% of the time in August with a 57% GB rate. That gives me some hesitation in saying he's turned a corner. Now in August he seemed to be hitting balls up the middle a lot more as well which maybe points to a change in approach. I just don't think next season you count on Goins being anything more than a backup.

They should consider in ST getting him more appearances in the outfield. Goins has the range and arm as an infielder. Maybe he can make the adjustment to be Zobrist-lite.

I'm totally on board with that...at the beginning of the season most said we had zero depth...mostly because they assumed goins and pillar were terrible and didn't think Travis would be as good as he turned out to be. I must admit, I didn't think much of goins myself and was a bit skeptical when it came to pillar...now we look at having those three, and add pompey and now revere to the fold and things look a lot brighter for the future.

Anyone that thought Goins and Pillar as depth was crud, are dumn.

Great problem to have.

I would even consider trading Tulo, restocking the farm, and putting his $20 million into the rotation. Goins at SS and Travis at 2B.

But we're getting ahead of ourselves. Let's see if he can keep it up for another month.

Not sure if srs???

Trollfest, thanks for coming out.

I hope you realize that Goins is still an awful hitter. He's been good for the Jays this season but you can't really expect anything going forward.

Still, he has stuck for now and Gruber had that right.

When will you admit that Goins is a good offensive player, average at worse, given his position?

Posted
He hasn't even been an average hitter given his position, this season (his "breakout" year). I don't know what could possibly compel me to admit such a thing.

He did not hit in the minors. A league-average line is Buffalo doesn't mean anything for someone older than ~23. I have no doubt he can be a .240 hitter.

Stop North, you should'nt have to explain this.

This. Pillar was torrid in July too, but then rolled back to what he actually is as a hitter. There was all this talk about reducing his leg kick being the reason etc....like Goins tweak of leaving bat on shoulder we are discussing now.

These two are quite valuable players imo but we shouldn't make them out to be more than they most likely are.

lol I'm sure one of them (probably North) bitched at me for throwing out the babip line for Pillar's torrid month, saying that I can't pick and choose stats like that, but it figures that I'm not allowed to do that Goins either.

A good scenario would be Goins continuing this pace to the end of the season. Then he can be shopped in a thin MIF market in hopes of getting back a useful piece. If no such trade exists, you keep him and hope he continues to be a worthwhile depth player at a position that the Jays have struggled to fill.

I think a good comparison to Goins for the older fans around is Manny Lee. Good glove, frustrating as hell with the bat. But at the time Manny got as much hate by casuals as the so called "advanced stat" crew has given Goins until recently.

they are average players who get by because of their defense. Any hitting near the league average is a bonus

Maybe time to convert Travis to LF

Wasn't Detroit's plans to make him an outfielder because of Kinsler? I'm not sure how he did there.

He's a little slow for an accountant.

Or a little realistic

Travis probably doesn't make the plays Goins does, the extra outs. Take that catch in the foul.ground Goins made last night. That's a big out and with Travis that's a foul ball.

He was briefly in CF too before we acquired him!

That was an experiment the Tigers did because of positional need. If I had worked out, they wouldn't have needed to make the Gose trade. It didn't and that's for the best.
