mellowgold Verified Member Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 I really think Stroman is coming back as a starter, at least at first, for a few reasons. 1) Some of our guys (looking at you, Dickey and Buehrle) look like they might be tiring just a bit and could probably use an extra day off here and there. 2) Stroman is awesome and if there's any chance at all that he comes back and is anywhere close to as effective as he was last year (and there is), we want him in the rotation down the stretch and into the playoffs. 3) Less importantly, dude wants it so bad. Even if you don't think this should matter, I think he's viewed as such an important piece of the long-term puzzle, they'll try to keep him happy. As of right now, he's scheduled to make two rehab starts Sept. 2 and Sept. 7, which puts him on schedule to come back Sept. 12 in New York, so here's how the rotation is shaping up heading into the Yankees series. vs DET Dickey (4 days rest) Hutch (4) Buehrle (4) vs CLE Price (4) Estrada (4) Dickey (4) vs BAL Hutch (5) Price (4) *jumping ahead of MB here to keep Price on 4 days rest, give MB a breather, and have Price on schedule to pitch game 1 of the NY series* Buehrle (6) @BOS Estrada (5) Dickey (5) Hutch (4) @NY Price (4) Buehrle (4) STROMAN (4) Estrada (5) So now we have six in the rotation, but at this point, we'll have seen Hutch for three starts (vs DET, vs BAL, and @BOS) to see how he does, and we have lots of options with 19 games remaining to set up the rotation for the playoffs. If Hutch sucks, we can drop him and still have five; if Estrada or Dickey implodes, same thing. I guess what I'm getting at is what are everyone's thoughts on how Stroman fits in, 'cause he's coming fast.

Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 I'm not sure they pitch Stroman at the Yankees for his first start. They may be a little more cautious and let him make the first start at home. Who knows though.

That's the timeline they've set;http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/blue-jays-set-tentative-plan-for-marcus-stroman/ Now there is a chance Stro needs some extra days rest or extra starts along the way but if everything goes right expect him on the mound in NY on the 12th.

If he does start on Sept. 12 in New York, and we keep six in the rotation, his first start at home would be Saturday, Sept. 19 against the Red Sox, which would be sweet, 'cause it's the one game I have tickets to.

mellowgold Verified Member Posted August 28, 2015 Author Posted August 28, 2015 Hmm who leaves the rotation then Hutch? We have about three turns through the rotation between now and then, so whoever pitches the worst, I would assume. If everyone pitches well, then Price (obviously) and Stroman (to get him in shape and stretched out) go every five and the rest fall in line when they can. Should be fun to watch it play out.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 this could be amazing... hope it all goes well. if he starts the 12. that would bring him up again the 18th against boston and then again the 23 against NY if jays go with 5 man rotation... and I have tickets to the last NY game. that would be f***ing amazing!!!! would love to see Stroshow pitch!!!

Why would he need rest though? His injury wasn't arm related so I would think if anyone is fresh it's him. In a way this injury has been a blessing in disguise. If he had pitched all year people would be yapping about inning limits. There's no such problem now right when the team needs him the most.
KingOfTheCourt Verified Member Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 I don't see why they couldn't just go with a 6 man rotation the rest of the year until someone implodes or if someone gets hurt. Just skip over starts to make sure Price gets his normal slot but I think it could be beneficial to give some of the other starters extra rest. This gives Gibby some options as to who will pitch in certain games like setting up Hutch to pitch predominately at home or set up certain matchups like avoiding Buehrle at the Yankees etc.

Excited for Stroman but trying to temper expectations.

He shouldn't need any rest but they taking a cautious approach and like all pitchers there is a chance he'll need to take a step back and recover as he builds arm strength. Let's also remember that a pitcher's lower-half is very important; his knee needs to be healthy to pitch well.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 6 man rotation? god no. Excited for Stroman but trying to temper expectations. If anything they should move to a 4man rotation and get to the BP earlier in games.

Don't see it happening, especially if we continue to lead the division. Six gives us more flexibility to set things up how we want them for the postseason, and will keep everyone fresh. You'll see either five or six once Stroman is back. I would prefer five, but I could understand their thinking of six is the way they decide to go.

Using their BP more would accomplish this as well and would keep their best pitchers on the mound while moving their less effective starters into short terms roles that will allow them to excel. I don't see it happening but it makes way more sense than a 6-man rotation,

We used a four-man for eight games, ONLY because we had three off-days mixed in. You say Hutch is the odd man out, well who is the other odd man out if we go to four like you suggest?

Price will get as many starts as needed, going to 6 limits that.
