I don't give a s*** if hes hitting. Anytime Navarro doesn't catch is a good thing.

Martin is hitting like .170 since late July. He himself admitted he was banged up after catching the knuckleballer squarely in the palm rather than the glove. He outright admitted he wants Thole up here.

If you want Martin to be utterly useless when it counts (September/Post season), then sure, yeah, lets continue playing Martin the rest of the way with 0 rest to heal.

This is an example of good roster management, at least from the perspective of demoting Hutchison, and people still yap about it. As far as handling the situation so that Hutchison doesn't feel slighted or hurt...it takes a few minutes of conversation. He knows he's not going to bump Dickey, Price or Buehlre so it comes down to him or Estrada and Estrada's been pitching well. They just need to explain to him that they want to keep him ready for the rotation for the September playoff drive so they don't want to put him in the pen. Meanwhile he can rest his arm a bit with strict pitch limits while working on some mechanics.

It makes perfect sense, Hutch is the only starter with an option.

David Price and Dickey are the Jays best starters. Hutch has been brutal and luck has very little to do with it, inconsistent would be more accurate.

Estrada doesn't have options so it would complicate things. You'd have to move him to the bullpen and demote someone else to get the extra spot.

There's nothing sustainable about a .420 road BABIP. 51 IP is not predictive of a true talent level or long term trend.

Yeah I get that, but it's still hard to ignore the results.

Has anyone done studies on the duration of short term and long term "luck". Wouldn't it be perfectly reasonable to admit Hutch has had bad luck all year, particularly on the road, but to say we don't know how long that bad luck will continue and we can't afford to find out because there's a chance it could continue through to the end of the year?

Some continually say Hutch has had bad luck, yet you could argue he's never had "good luck" in his MLB career (spanning 375 innings). He's never had an ERA under his FIP or xFIP and over the past 2 years it hasn't even been close. At some point, we might conclude it's not bad luck right?

Are ppl here tarded. Hutch is not demoted he just won't start on the road and thus us going to make AAA start to stay regular.

Well he is demoted in the literal sense but yeah it's just a question of using his roster spot while he is being skipped.

They're playing in Philadelphia tomorrow and Wednesday. Extra pinch hitters always come in handy in the National League.

No idea if its going to translate. Hague is another career ML bat, but his numbers in BUFF are pretty impressive this season.

57 BBs

56 Ks

.909 OPS

You have to drop one of the starters, yes. I like Drew more than Estrada but the latter is likely out of options.

It makes sense. Before his last 2 starts a number of us were calling for this. Agree that how its managed with Hutch is important. He is a competitor and no matter what he isn't going to like it.

These moves are pretty sensible on the surface. The only irritating thing is that they could have just shortened the bullpen earlier and eliminated any need to callup Hague by simply keeping Valencia around the whole time.

If he has any level of maturity at all, which I think he does, there shouldn't be any issues on his end with the decision. I don't understand why some are acting as if it's the end of the world.

Like the move, everyone has been better than him in the rotation throughout the season, esp on the road. Don't need him with 2 off days.

Yes, you are correct. There are points at which these things stabilize and become skill-based. However, the sample necessary to establish a large skill-based difference between a pitcher's ERA and xFIP abilities is very large. 375 innings is still a pretty small sample.

The home/road split thing almost certainly isn't a real thing.

Sorry - I may have combined a couple of thoughts there. I get there are stabilization rates and that at some point we may establish a large skill-based difference between his ERA and his xFIP abilities.

I'm more interested in the boards thoughts on my comment about short term bad luck. Let's say we've concluded he's had bad luck. What's to say that bad luck won't continue? We're in the middle of a pennant race. At some point do you say it's too risky to continue running him out there in hopes that this stretch of bad luck is going to end?

I would assume there's no rhyme or reason as to when short term bad/good luck starts or ends.

one week ago, most of you here would approve this move. After two HOME starts, you guys acting like we just demoted our cy young.

god the bi-polarism on this board is off the charts

Hutch is only going down to maintain the 5th day start as he won't be making a start on the road trip.

Anyone who thinks he is demoted is borderline troll.

I think it's a good move. But Drew would think otherwise.

we're going into a National league park and need position players.

we have days off that mean we don't need 5 starters

He can be recalled in 10 days

no one else has an option, so it's the right roster move.

Hutchison can start in AAA so he stays sharp.

wish we still had Valencia.

This makes perfect sense and had to be expected. The Jays are in win now mode, no time for hurt feelings.

Hutch is also probably well aware of why the move was made, as is Loup. They have options. Depth is needed at least for the NL games, if not a little longer. The team has off days which gives 4 starters to go on normal rest making a 5th redundant in that situation so it's the best thing to do when you're trying to win games. When a 5th guy is needed Hutch will be back. Loup will probably be back as soon as his 10 days are up as well unless someone goes on the DL. I'm just not thrilled with having only one lefty out of the pen but I guess they could recall Hynes after sending someone down if they need/want another lefty.

Do you guys really think Alex and Gibbons look at sabermetrics? Why reference FIP when the decision makers don't have a clue what it is? He has sucked on the road (legit sucked, not unlucky), and even though it might be a sample size issue, they don't want to risk it during a time when they can avoid using him on the road. He will be back up and he will be starting road games in late August/September unless Stroman is back somehow.

You are kidding right? You think that our organization does not use sabermetrics or know what advanced stats are? That's kind of funny actually.

Hutch could actually stay in his Toronto condo and commute to Buffalo if he wanted to. (if the Bisons are playing at home)

I suspect Hutch doesn't like it but will suck it up and be a good soldier. Not sure how his contract is but I would imagine he'll maintain his major league salary also during his reassignment.

I tried finding the exact quote but I think they changed the article since the last time I saw it. It was along the lines of, "I dont mind some help, I need a breather" or something of that sort.

So conjecture by you and Blair, I swear you should be a writer man...

“The other balls, I’m able to catch in the glove. The knuckleball, I never catch it in the sweet spot,” Martin explained. “My other glove, I’m catching the ball in the sweet spot almost every time. With that one, it’s rattling around in my glove, so every once in a while it will catch me on the inside part of the thumb and it jams it a little bit. It’s not broken. Just bangs it a little bit.”

Hardly..."He outright admitted he wants Thole up here."
