Caper Verified Member Posted August 15, 2015 Posted August 15, 2015 Wow you are really attached to this Osuna/AAA equivalent Mexican league thing Yes. Because it supports a point I've wondered about often.... This whole idea that prospects will fall apart when challenged or fail.

Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2015 Posted August 15, 2015 Every 18/19 yr old with half an arm would be rolled through the Mexican League if I had my way. Why?
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2015 Posted August 15, 2015 Yes. Because it supports a point I've wondered about often.... This whole idea that prospects will fall apart when challenged or fail. Putting players in a position to fail can also create bad habits that become hard to break. The idea that they will just adjust to more advanced competition and continue to develop is flawed in my opinion. Some kids obviously will, but why rush until they've mastered each level?
Caper Verified Member Posted August 15, 2015 Posted August 15, 2015 Why? I was being a bit sarcastic. My point is, if a pitcher displays solid stuff and there are no restrictions on his pitches, it can be positive for his development. Even a guy like Matt Boyd, coming up and getting absolutely shelled, was good for his development.... Terrible for the team though.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2015 Posted August 15, 2015 Depends on how you look at it. You see it as putting someone in a position to fail... Others view it as challenging the player. If a player is always babied and never pushed will they ever learn to reach deep down when things all of a sudden aren't as easy as they've always been for them? Maybe it's time to see if Conner Greene can grow some hair on his balls. Challenging a player and putting them in a position to fail are two separate things. In a game like baseball where bad habits develop quickly and are hard to break, why risk it. I'm not talking specifically about Greene, I'm talking about the ******** narrative on this board that "challenge them because they will figure it out eventually if they're ML quality" pisses me off. I also don't agree with learning to "reach deep down inside" as that sounds like something Buck and Pat would refer to.
Camps Verified Member Posted August 15, 2015 Posted August 15, 2015 Everyone knows that it was the Mexican AAA league and not a Mexican league that is equivalent to MLB's AAA, right? Because that's a pretty huge difference that you might not get from just reading this thread without that prior knowledge.

Davis said that Greene matured a lot this year and he is a very confident pitcher. He pitches to contact, has very good fastball command and a good change-up. His fastball has late life and that allows him to challenge hitters and induce weak contact. As he was discussing Greene I said his description reminded me of Drew Hutchison when he was in the minors. Davis agreed that was a reasonable comp but he noted that Greene has a better breaking ball than Drew did at the same level."
