Avila replaces Dombrowski as Tigers GM: http://m.mlb.com/news/article/141107462/tigers-name-al-avila-new-general-manager

A lot of people have talked about how they'd like the Jays to consider Dombrowski as the new team president due to the fact that his contract was up at the end of the year. With the moves he made at the deadline to sell Price and Cespedes, many thought that it meant an extension would soon follow, because it looked like ownership had enough trust in him to take the franchise on a new path.

I guess there was way more to it than that. I'll keep this post updated with new information.

I think it was just mutually agreed upon. The team is not going anywhere, get Avila used to GM activities.

Dombrowski can take a break for the rest of the season and then entertain offers.

I don't think the Jays will get him right now. They'll wait until the season is over out of respect to Beeston and then sign Dombrowski.

It's funny how people were just talking about the possibility of luring Beane to the president's role and I almost made a comment in that thread about how I'd prefer Dombrowski, but I stopped when I recalled all the speculation that he might now extend in Detroit. This goes to show how little baseball reporters really know of what's going on behind the scenes. Really curious to see how this plays out, and if the Jays do entice Dombrowski to sign-on in the offseason, I'll be very interested to see if AA manages to keep his job.

I don't know too much about their Organizational depth but from my perspective the only guy that really needs to go is Brad Ausmus... he's the worst.

Why would he resign with two months left unless he got an offer he couldn't refuse. Jays could offer him full control of the team.

I guarantee he will. DD likes AA

Respect for Beeston??? f*** that!! Take the guy that you want NOW, and let Beeston ride off into the Sunset.

Interesting dynamic, DD could base his decision on what he thought about the deal he made with AA for Price.

Or conspiracy theory, part of the deal was the understanding that DD would be let go so he could join Jays?

You'd really prefer DD to Beane? Wow.

Yes. You and I know nothing about how much each of these executives is responsible for in their respective organizations, and it's incredibly pretentious to pretend that we do. With that said, the amount of alarming and questionable moves the A's made after Zaidi left the organization has really made me reconsider my views on Billy Beane. I don't think I'll ever get over the fact that he signed Billy Butler to a 30M contract in the same offseason where he sold Donaldson to save on payroll.

Not only does Dombrowski have a very good record himself (http://grantland.com/features/dave-dombrowski-detroit-tigers/), he's probably more equipped and qualified to run an organization from the president's role than Billy Beane is.

How could you know that DD likes AA and that he would make a good club president?

I have no real way of knowing that. His track record as a gm says it all. What makes you think he wouldn't succeed as a president?

Beeston is in bed by 10 pm f*** him.

So, in the offseason BJ wanted DD to work over AA, but PA wouldn't allow BJ to negotiate with DD, so BJ had PB stay on to work over AA. Then, there was some brief speculation that BJ wanted AA to work under BB, and now MI releases DD right after he trades DP to BJ, and lots of people think that DD will come in to work for BJ over AA.

Things are looking up!

Who is PA?

Unless you have assurances that Became will be on the market this off season you go after DD now.

There are no assurances, and Beane won't be on the market. We have no reason to believe he will, so the assumption should be that he won't.

How could you know that DD likes AA and that he would make a good club president?

We can't know any of that. None of us can know who would be a better club president. We know nothing about how how these front offices are run and who exactly is to credit or to blame for the organization's moves. All we can do is provide completely uneducated guesses and voice our preferences, and absolutely nobody here is qualified enough to validate or dismiss those opinions.

It might be easy to write off morons like Stewart and Amaro because they've exposed themselves enough in the media to where we know that they're probably not qualified to run a major league franchise. It's a lot tougher to figure out who would make a better executive between guys like Beane and Dombrowski because we don't even have an iota of the information we'd need to make that determination.

The two major openings on the horizon right now look to be the Jays and the Red Sox, and this guy seems to think the Sox won't be in the running:

I could be wrong as its been a while, but wasn't there strong rumours back in 2001 that Dombrowski wold be the GM of the Blue Jays (before Ricciardi) ?
