SAAviour Verified Member Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 Let's play GM, with no benefit of hindsight. Do you pull the trigger on the deal? Tulo could get injured during his first at bat, as could Reyes...Hoffman could turn into best pitcher in baseball, or never make it. No hindsight, vote now...good deal or bad deal. No turning back in 2 years.

Tulo's deal is longer but he at least has a shot of living up to it and the cost in prospects was quite manageable.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 Yes BUT... this deal I would make only if I was still intent on trading for pitching. I would have offered even more for Carrasco. The purported deal of Norris, Hoffman & Pompey was good enough for me. I would have thrown in another prospect.

Not sure where you read that purported deal, but I've heard from an inside source that Stroman was the primary piece requested in the Carrasco proposal. I would still give Norris, Sanchez and Pompey for Carrasco, all day long. Stroman is tougher to give up.
SaskJaysFan_2 Verified Member Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 Reyes was making an error a game, and he was just going to get worse. To get rid of him helps a ton. And we get the best SS in baseball back. For prospects. It hurts, but we are better for shizzle.

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 I'm super stoked. Tulowitzki is the best SS in baseball, and really shores up the D on the left side. Our left side of the infield has to be one of the best ever. If Hoffman is the only big piece to deal (I'm meh on Castro) then I'm pretty damn happy.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 Lol @ who the only guy to vote "no" is.
SAAviour Verified Member Posted July 28, 2015 Author Posted July 28, 2015 Tulo straight up for Castro and Hoffman is a joke...but Colorado also agreed to take Reyes? Wow, there is worse teams to be a fan of then the jays!

FA should be really exciting for the Bluejays.

FA should be really exciting for the Bluejays. Doesn't mean they shouldn't try. Let's assume Buerleh retires so the Jays rotation next here would be Stroman and Hutch. If we are going to spend money on a starter next year it makes all the sense in the world to try and get one right now that is in control and go for this year as well. Hamels would fit well

No turning back in 2 years. Main reason I don't make the deal is I use those trade pieces for a SP. I just don't see Tulo playing SS in 3 years, he'll be a very expensive DH. I think the first 3 years the Jays have a solid player, but ages 34-36 are going to be the problems years for Tulo. But, the bigger reason I don't make the trade is that I'd have gone after a stud SP.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 This is a great trade. Immediate upgrade on both sides of the ball at short for decent but not great prospects and some long term salary freedom. The only thing to not like about it is his tendency to get injured and playing on the s***** Rogers Center infield at least until the Argos ship out to BMO. The next move should be trading Encarnacion for a starter. Play Smoak every day at 1B then rotate the DH position between Bautista, Tulo, Colabello and Navarro (assuming the Jays will have the latter two on the roster for the rest of the year) and call up Pompey to get Colabello off the field as much as possible. The net impact on the MLB roster would be a minimal downgrade on offense with a substantial upgrade on defense and pitching. And all it took was a couple of ok prospects.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 I would do this a million times over. This isn't the Dickey trade where you're giving up a top 5 MLB prospect + a good catching prospect for a 40 year old waferballer. You're giving up a good prospect + junk + Reyes and his negative D and contract for a current proven superstar. How can you hate

In the end it's not like you save a whole bunch on contracts anyways. In the Marlins trade we ended up taking on 2 bad contracts in Reyes and Buehrle to acquire JJ. Too risky clearing out all your prospects for one player as well.

You said this in the other thread and I'm still shaking my head. Did I miss the announcement where Norris, Sanchez and Osuna died in a vicious hippy van crash on the 401? Would I like to see us add another solid, proven, middle of the rotation starter? yes, but we have more than 2 options to start next year man......we get Tulo and you still act like a douche.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 From Francisco-Reyes-Goins/Izturis To Donaldson-Tulo-Travis WOW People harp on AA constantly bringing up the Marlins and Mets trades with Gomes occasionally thrown into the mix. As well as his complete inability to make good on promises to compete in the timelines he suggested. However, in terms of "what have you done for me lately", he's been great. If AA was fired two years ago and every move made since then was done by a new GM, people would be saying he's been awesome. His roster management and ability to build depth still sucks but otherwise I think he has learned from his mistakes.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 Lol @ who the only guy to vote "no" is. I clicked no as well. Just because it's not the upgrade I would have looked for. But I have no clue about availability either. I am pretty sure that Tulo will finish his contract worse than Reyes anyway. And not making the playoffs this year is much more of a hope than a belief.
bluebird Verified Member Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 we need pitchers but keep trading away our pitchers? This makes zero sense ,last time i checked reyes was great lead off guy .

Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 we need pitchers but keep trading away our pitchers? This makes zero sense ,last time i checked reyes was great lead off guy . Ugh. The Jays got a pitcher in the deal who would have a greater impact in 2015 on the MLB roster than the players they gave up. This stacked offense allows AA to trade off of the MLB roster for pitching without a substantial downgrade to the offense compared to how it was two days ago. Of course this assumes AA is thinking along those lines.
