HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2015 Posted June 3, 2015 Best shortstop and 2nd best player overall defensively: http://espn.go.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/id/58869/arenado-the-best-defensive-player-in-may He's been very valuable for us ever since our middle infield got injured. And he can stick it in LF on a fly. I definitely think Goins can stick.

flafson Verified Member Posted June 3, 2015 Posted June 3, 2015 He almost had a great bunt last night...
Caper Verified Member Posted June 3, 2015 Posted June 3, 2015 Maybe now that what was obvious to anyone who actually watched him play is written down on espn, he might gain a bit of respect. Kind of like when grantland came out with that pitch framing article a few years back. Everyone thought Jose Molina was the greatest catcher of all time.... Out of nowhere.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2015 Author Posted June 3, 2015 He almost had a great bunt last night... Buck: " That ball is going to stay fair!" *ball rolls foul *

BTS Community Moderator Posted June 3, 2015 Posted June 3, 2015 Worst offensive shortstop in May: Ryan Goins And the whole package comes with a sprinkle of bad base running.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2015 Author Posted June 3, 2015 btw if you go by defensive war I don't see Goins listed. But the best SS in baseball? Apparently it's Asdribble. So something is wrong the last time he had good numbers in the field was way back in 2008. It's like Vernon Wells coming out of nowhere and putting up another GG.

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2015 Posted June 3, 2015 I watched Goins take BP Sunday morning in Minneapolis and it was a cluster of line drives, roll overs and lazy fly balls. I actually couldn't believe it.

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2015 Posted June 3, 2015 What did you expect from a pro ball player taking batting practice? Not roll overs and lazy fly balls.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2015 Posted June 3, 2015 0 wins above replacement in 41 games = VERY VALUABLE Stick to making Adenhart jokes brah... Yup...we all would like him to be more but that dog ain't gonna hunt. Seems like we have been watching Pillar and Goins a long time now...a long time.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2015 Author Posted June 3, 2015 0 wins above replacement in 41 games = VERY VALUABLE Stick to making Adenhart jokes brah... Adenhart is old news. Taveras is easy pickings now, especially since he's a murderer.
Governator Community Moderator Posted June 3, 2015 Posted June 3, 2015 We definitely should've had bench full of above replacement level players to start the season.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2015 Author Posted June 3, 2015 We definitely should've had bench full of above replacement level players to start the season. Ideally every team would want that, but at some point those above replacement level players on the bench will want to be regulars.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2015 Posted June 3, 2015 Having some 1-2 WAR guys on the bench is really not a lot to ask for.
LTR Verified Member Posted June 3, 2015 Posted June 3, 2015 If he masters bunting he might turn into Ryan Johnny Mac Goins. Johnny Mac was over-rated defensively (no, before you react, I'm not saying he wasn't good). Goins is better defensively then Mac.

Seems to me that the Jays now just need Goins to have 8 DRS every month. Should be easy. Edited June 3, 2015 by TheHurl

Governator Community Moderator Posted June 3, 2015 Posted June 3, 2015 Having some 1-2 WAR guys on the bench is really not a lot to ask for. Pillar, Navarro, Valencia, Goins is not a terrible bench, in fact Goins is pretty much doing as expected at 0 war and is a good late inning defensive substitute. There is also Smoak who should be our starting 1B, Bautista's injury hasn't helped things. The problem is this season was headed this direction from game 1 when half the roster were experiments and several starters are fragile (Reyes, Saunders, arguably Bautista). The outcome was inevitable. I feel our bench players were good enough options for us it's just they haven't got to be used as bench roles. Pillar (our 4th outfielder) has been starting since the get go and Goins has played in more games than Travis.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2015 Posted June 3, 2015 We had the best defensive SS but now we don't have one at all.
Governator Community Moderator Posted June 3, 2015 Posted June 3, 2015 Johnny Mac was over-rated defensively (no, before you react, I'm not saying he wasn't good). Goins is better defensively then Mac. I never said Mac was better defensively than Goins.... but McDonald didn't strikeout much so he was a very good late inning option in tight games who can move runners around and provide a defensive upgrade in almost any position. If Goins can lower that K% by putting the ball in play more he might be able to make a career out of being a bench player like him. I'm pretty sure he'd enjoy that more than living in the minors.

It was more a general comment. I know people see Mac as a "defensive wizard", he certainly made some dazzling plays, but he also sometimes rushed plays and overall isn't quite as reliable as Goins.

Making quick throws was his whole game though. He didn't have a true shortstop's arm (more a 2B arm) but he made up for his limitation with his quick, accurate release. It worked way more often than not. He even managed to play a decent 3B.
LTR Verified Member Posted June 3, 2015 Posted June 3, 2015 Making quick throws was his whole game though. He didn't have great arm strength but he made up for it with his quick, accurate release. It worked more often than not. In his later years in Toronto I saw his quickness as a bit 'showy', often times wasn't needed, and a couple times lead to errors.
