Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 Agree Cito came close to Gibbons level of idiocy sometimes. As far as rookies go, Hentgen, Green, Delgado, Stewart, and several others all came up while Cito was manager. I'm sure you know Cito was Jays hitting coach for a few years before becoming interim manager. Green was famously mismanaged by Cito, he insisted on using vets over rookies, whether they deserved it or not (more often not...). Cito would have had Travis and Pompey riding the pine for pretty much anyone who had more service time than they did... And Francis would have been used in way more high leverage situations... Osuna would go weeks between appearances. And yes, I do know that Cito was a hitting coach, I phrased that poorly.

BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 He's the best manager we've had in recent memory, and it's not really close. Cito was just terrible, and Farrell made consistently worse decisions than Gibbons makes. He's made some bad decisions this year, but I don't think any more than most managers make. He's been worse with the bullpen this year than last, but he's been given a shittier bullpen to work with, too. Not sure the bullpen is shitter if the starters start giving us 6-7 innings regularly then we can see! Just not sure the rules and how you manage a bullpen from The 4th or 5th have been written!

glory Old-Timey Member Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 Cito likely would have made a great hitting coach... But he basically ruined every rookie he ever got his hands on, and was responsible for such utter brilliance as batting Kevin Millar cleanup. In his last run, the only rookie he "ruined" was Snider (who still hasn't panned out). Bautista's turnaround was in some part due to Gaston's coaching. Lind panned out under Cito. Romero panned out under Cito. Marcum came back from Tommy John Surgery and pitched well under Cito. Morrow had a very good RP to SP transition under Cito. Cecil had his best season as a starter under Cito. And so on. He didn't ruin young players in his 2nd stint, even if he did have moments of stupidity (Millar, Tallet, etc). Cito from 2008-10 was world's better than Gibbons. Cito from 95-97 was pretty bad, though. I'd easily rate Gibbons in the running for worst manager in Jays history, alongside Farrell and Buck.

This team loses many games it had ample opportunities to win. Winning teams pull those out more then not.

ScientificReason Verified Member Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 IMO, Gibbons has been terrible this year. However, if there's someone worse out there, you can be sure AA will find him. Giibons has been bad this year at everything. Lineup, bullpen, everything. Which is odd as I thought last year he was the least of the Jays issues.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted May 20, 2015 Author Posted May 20, 2015 Why would you bring Sanchez back after 98 pitches in the 8th inning in a close game, especially since he's prone to lose it? Then when Hutch is at 98 pitches, they don't even bring him out to pitch the 7th. Ugh. I almost flipped the car when I heard Howarth say Sanchez was coming back out. The 7th it looked like he was gascanning with his 2 walks. Osuna should have pitched the 8th completely

Governator Community Moderator Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 The last time this team was close to being relevant was 2008's 86 game season. They were 21st in runs scored and 1st in ERA resulting in 4th in the majors in run differential (2nd in AL). It's a team sport but when it comes to winning your odds drastically improve with great pitching over great offense and we haven't seen that in years. There's a reason we can't hit great pitching because great pitching outweighs great hitting. I'm pretty tired of the same ol' team.

Rotations projects as what next year, Stroman, Hutchison, Norris, Sanchez, Hoffman? I dunno, odds are that to of those guys will suck and another will lose most of the year to injury.

Then they get good and leave (Carpenter and Escobar).
