Did anyone look at Zauns suit and think that pocket square looked like he stuffed a dead Oriole in there? Goddammit I love it!

Hendriks today:

81.00 ERA

-2.93 FIP

-2.93 xFIP

They need to get him out of there. He opened the door for the Orioles to get back in.

I really think evaluating a pitcher based on xFIP in 0.1 IP is completely pointless. Just my opinion.

Yes, in that context you are correct.

Posted
But still more useful than ERA in 0.1 IP!

Both are irrelevant. IMO the only way to evaluate a pitcher in a small sample, is by watching closely. I had someone claim that Eovaldi was pitching "ok" through 4 innings a couple of weeks back because of his xFIP when it was clear he was pitching well at the time.

You guys are joking right? Week oppo grounder, another grounder, a soft line drive and a nice K.

This is coming from the same people who thought Sanchez's start was decent last night....

Watching tells you nothing as well.

I wasn't evaluating anything, was just showing how huge the gap in a small sample can be. Maybe I should have said that.

Ok, agree to disagree then. If some posters think xFIP is the only way to evaluate a pitcher's start then so be it, but I think that is wrong. Let's agree to disagree.

Give reedjohnsonfan some credit, Hendriks looked pretty good to me, it's not like the balls that were hit off him were hard....

Well xFIP is actually vey flawed, but trying to make sense of things by watching is just back-pedalling.

I don't think so. It's important to use stats and watch IMO, but if you don't think so, that's fine.

I'm not talking about Hendriks, he looked fine. I just thought it was weird when someone posted Eovaldi was looking just "ok" a couple weeks back because of his xFIP...

It all depends on who is doing the evaluating.

Professional scouts will never beat reliable metrics.

Meh.. Makes things robotic and boring. So basically the games don't even have to be watched to get a proper evaluation?

Call me old school, but i just think there is more to evaluating a player than plain simple metrics.

reliable metrics will never beat the organization that uses both reliable metrics and above average scouting.
