do you really want a 8, 9 of smoak Pillar/Pompey? those guys would get nothing but breaking balls to hit all year and the 6,7 guys would be pitched around to get to 8,9

 

putting two really bad hitters 8, 9 makes it really easy for the other team.

 

That's an interesting perspective. I never thought about putting crappier hitters higher in the order so they get challenged, but it's possible considering teams seem to put sometimes weaker "contact" hitters near the top. It's an interesting topic but when it comes to fruition there is no chance Saunders is batting 9th.
