HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted April 5, 2015 Posted April 5, 2015 I wouldn't want Quentin. He's no defensive whiz and you can't tell me he'll be better than Pillar/Saunders. Acquiring Quentin is at much deadweight as Lind was.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted April 5, 2015 Posted April 5, 2015 Joe Sheehan The #Padres just demoted two guys (Quackenbush, Maurer) who might be best two relievers for COL, ATL, maybe MIL. AA, do it!!
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted April 5, 2015 Posted April 5, 2015 I think they're not competing this year, so why keep him when you can write him off the books? Because baseball is an entertainment enterprise and letting Quentin take some at bats away from Johnny Gomes and Todd Cunningham won't affect them long-term. Quentin projects as solidly above replacement. Should every non-contender just DFA all their players who project between 0.5 and 1 WAR? That they happened to acquire Quentin in trade today doesn't change his value as an asset.

He hasn't played 100+ games since 2011 when he played 118 games with the sox. It's an even worse idea to bring him here on the turf when he has such a poor injury history. I think the Braves are playing this right, he's not going to be worth that $8m payout for the season, not with the direction they're going. Markakis in right, Young Jr. in CF and a platoon of Kelly Johnson and Gomes in LF should be plenty for them
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted April 5, 2015 Posted April 5, 2015 Brandon Maurer pls He'd project as our best righty reliever. Hopefully AA comes through with his "we'll look around at what's available at the end of Spring Training" shtick.

StroShow Verified Member Posted April 5, 2015 Posted April 5, 2015 What would it take to get both? Everything and nothing. (I honestly wouldn't know)
flafson Verified Member Posted April 6, 2015 Posted April 6, 2015 We should give them Navarro and they could flip him to Arizona.

AA, do it!! Whatever they just gained in picking up Kimbrel, they probably just gave away by demoting arguably their two best holds guys. I suspect this is just to buy time in order to trade one or two other guys though. I'd love to get either / both.

Kimbrel projects for 2.3 WAR by Fangraphs depth charts, which eclipses demoting those guys. Shawn Kelley projected better as a set-up guy too. It's still not a huge upgrade though, I agree with your main point.
GreekFatAss Verified Member Posted April 6, 2015 Posted April 6, 2015 Realistically who could we flip within reason to get both? It would tremendously add significant depth to the pen and allow us to put Castro and Osuna back in the minors where they belong...

GreekFatAss Verified Member Posted April 6, 2015 Posted April 6, 2015 They were added to the 40 man. It's too late now. I would keep them down until June simply to avoid having a bunch of Super 2 guys in a couple years.

I'd be shocked if either of those players ended up anywhere close to as "bad" as those projections suggest at the end of the year. Both probably outperform Kelley. Hopefully they'll both be back up fairly quickly and we can find out.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted April 6, 2015 Author Posted April 6, 2015 I would keep them down until June simply to avoid having a bunch of Super 2 guys in a couple years. Of course. Problem is AA made it so that doing so would now cost an option. If he'd waited, like, a few hours, he might now have a couple of trade targets.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted April 6, 2015 Posted April 6, 2015 Love the deal for Atlanta. Kimbrel in that Petco should be illegal though. I'm guessing that Quentin was DFA'd as a favour to him, when he signed in San Diego he said it was the only city he'd play for.
guylaroche5 Verified Member Posted April 6, 2015 Posted April 6, 2015 the barves owned this deal. crazy overpay by the padres but I guess since they're "all-in" any sense of rationality is thrown out the window
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted April 6, 2015 Posted April 6, 2015 Why all of a sudden is BJ no longer being referred to as BJ? Because he is an idiot.
