Something the Jays used to do to an annoying extent was to give absolutely everyone a legitimate look. Jo-Jo Reyes being the crown jewel. Part of me kind of likes the current 'fast and loose' front office that isn't afraid to cut guys they don't love.

I find even worse than sticking with these guys, is the cloying way the media fawns so much over these scrub players, trying so hard to make us feel guilty for not worshipping them as much we do the superstars, and reminding us in the most maudlin way possible that all players deserve equal respect and admiration. They often focus more on these scrubs and their 'journeys' than on legitimate players, doing everything they can to turn these players into fan favourites. See also: Kawasaki, Arancebia, Nix, Eveland, McDonald, etc.

Cecil

Loup

Redmond

Estrada

Hynes

Hendricks

Osuna

Castro

8 man bullpen with two 20 year old potential starter studs!! yay roster management!!

Feel the despair run through you.

No I want that, I don't want Goins being the backup everything because they need to find a way to have Osuna in the pen.

I wonder if they want to start Osuna in the pen to keep his innings down at the start of the season. After a couple months they can send him down, stretch him out, and bring him up when Sanchez or Norris reach their innings limit.

Going with a 3 man bench is a brutal decision. It makes it so that you cant rotate players in to give guys a day off without f***ing the starting lineup over. There is always at least one guy who is a little beat up so the bench ends up being Navarro and Goins.

I have my doubts that Osuna or Catsro is a better reliever than Drabek this year.

that's the funniest thing I've read in a long time. The thought of Drabek being a better reliever than Castro is so funny. You're loathing of the Jays is clouding your judgement. Castro has 2 plus pitches he commands very well. He's young, he hasn't pitched in AA, or AAA, but he's got the stuff to be successful and I'm glad he's going to be helping the Jays win games this season. I'd delay his joining the team a couple weeks, but I want him on the team for the majority of the season.

How long would you keep a negative WAR reliever in your bullpen for the off chance that he eventually becomes a good player. Wanting to keep Drabek would be a sunken cost fallacy.

Drabek isn't completely Ricky Romero, but he's not far away from that. A pitcher who cant throw strikes is as useless an ejection seat on a helicopter

That's what I mean, Nothing wrong with waxing Nostalgic about Halladay or the upside Drabek once promised, But he has no place on the Jays Roster.

Drabek has changed. He doesn't walk much now but can't strike guys out either. Stuff is gone.

there really wasn't any upside left to make an argument too keep him.

I don't think the argument is that Drabek is better than Castro/Osuna, its that:

a) the difference between them is probably negligible (maybe half a win over 60 innings)

B) said difference does not warrant burning up a year of control for either of these pitchers, particularly when neither have ever pitched above A ball

I can't see how Drabek has anything to do with Castro or Osuna. If the Jays thought he would be anything but a liability in the pen they would have kept him. Delabar/Osuna maybe. Also an extra half win would double the bullpens projected WAR.

He's no longer an asset. This goes in the who cares column.

Exactly. Getting rid of a player with a negative WAR for it's career should be at the top of that who cares column.

Agreed, but I feel like the reaction would be different if they released Smoak.

Off topic, but this got my curiosity and I set out to prove it wrong. It turns out there is a helicopter called the Kamov Ka-50 that does indeed have an ejection seat where the rotors get knocked off by explosives prior to the seat ejecting. Howver, there are a bunch of less obvious reasons for not having ejections seats aside from just chopping up the pilot:

1) Helicopters typically fly too low for parachutes to be practical

2) Skilled pilots can use the concept of autorotation to still land a helicopter safely if something goes wrong

3) It's cost prohibitive to engineer ejection seats into a helicopter because

Conclusion: Your analogy is valid. Also the Kamov Ka-50 is like the Randy Johnson of helicopters.

The second Tommy John surgery zapped his velocity. I had hope for him prior to the spring but I think he's done now.

Smoak has had some success at this level, so there's a bit more optimism there... Also, Smoak hasn't had 2 surgeries that have drained him of most of his abilities.

I was just being a smartass, I will say the fact that he was healthy while he sucked doesn't fill me with any confidence.

Smoak can actually play defense.... Drabek just pitches poorly. bad comparison

I didn't compare the two players, just pointed out Smoak has negative WAR for his career. I would have no qualms with releasing Smoak though. I wonder why everybody thinks he's a defensive specialist when he seems to just not be as much of a butcher as EE, Not like he will provide positive value from defense, He just won't bleed value as fast as EE.

Sanchez and Norris have no innings limit as far as I know. They both pitched between 130-140 innings last year and I have read the Jays have said no limit.

Smoak's defense frequently gets overstated. He provides more defensive value than EE or Lind but he's not a glove man like Daric Barton.

If they have no innings limit then the only advantage of starting Osuna in the pen would be that they are going with the best team possible, But if anything bad happens to a starter they will be stuck with Estrada for at least a month. I figured they would be limited to 160-170 innings. I don't think it would be a bad idea to have Sanchez start for 140 innings then move him to the pen for another 30 and have Osuna provide the other 50 innings as a starter. Having Osuna spend an entire season in the pen will limit him to only about 70 innings, which has to effect his development negatively.

Looks like the Jays are doing away with inning limits all together.

Bold, I personally think strict innings limits are wrong headed since all pitchers are different. The pitchers will show signs of fatigue and that should be what is taken into account, Especially since injuries seem to be preceded by a drop in velocity rather than a set amount of innings.

Why is being stuck with Estrada a bad thing? He's probably our 5th best starter ATM.

It wouldn't be the worst, but If it can be avoided it should.

Agreed. Estrada is going to start games for the Jays this year, barring some unbelievable luck with health. The Jays need as many arms capable of starting as possible.

If Osuna and Castro get a few starts here and there, that wouldn't be bad either. If they are going to be up anyway, then try to get as many innings as possible.

They would have to send Castro or Osuna to the minors before they could start, Spot starts will go to Estrada and Hendricks.
