gbill2004 Verified Member Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 @ShiDavidi: Michael Saunders should rejoin #BlueJays by mid-April instead of around all-star break after surgery removes torn meniscus

intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 I'm taking this with a bit of a grain of salt. But, like, I said in the other thread, such a massive decrease in the approximated recovery time has to indicate that we definitely won't have to wait anywhere close to July to see him.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 lol We used to hear this all the time with the JPR regime. 2 weeks = 10 weeks. Mid April = Mid July
pat_borders Verified Member Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 lol We used to hear this all the time with the JPR regime. 2 weeks = 10 weeks. Mid April = Mid July I was kinda wondering, when I tore my meniscus and had my ACL hanging together by a thread, I was pretty much back to running full speed at 5 weeks.
BTS Community Moderator Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 "The dramatic change in prognosis came after team orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Steven Mirabello found that the tear Saunders suffered in a freak accident Wednesday was so significant, it could not be repaired. Initially, the plan was to fix the meniscus, which requires a significantly longer recovery period. But given that the procedure has a coin-flip success rate, particularly for professional athletes, Saunders’ preference was to have the damaged cartilage removed anyway, according to general manager Alex Anthopoulos" This doesn't seem good to me. Forum MD's?

NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 So, bad news for Michael Saunders' knee, good news for the 2015 Blue Jays.

Forum MD's? It's the same injury Derick Rose always has. They were going to remove his as well. Doesn't sound like it's a big deal, why wouldn't they just remove it in the first place instead of waiting for a July return?
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 So, bad news for Michael Saunders' knee, good news for the 2015 Blue Jays. Now he's not a good long term option.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 Now he's not a good long term option. he never really was, no way I'm going to invest in a player like him, even if he puts up great numbers in 2015/2016.

Zaun of the Dead Verified Member Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 it's probably ******** they're telling us because they don't want to spend any money on a replacement.
StroShow Verified Member Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 The fact that he wanted to remove it regardless of situation tells me he doesn't care about arthritis 10+ years from now. There would have been no guarantee that it wouldn't tear again after repairing it either, so I can understand why he would have elected to remove it. He is 28 and wants to play, win, and make money. Missing another half of a prime season would suck for him.

Forum MD's? I can vouch that this is accurate. While I'm obviously not a doctor, I process short term disability claims for a living and a torn meniscus is a common claim. When processing claims we have access to a medical database that uses historical data to give us recovery times for pretty much any surgery, and a meniscus repair(either open or arthroscopic) is a much longer recovery time than an arthroscopic meniscectomy. A repair for someone like an athlete would be 140 days (maximum) Arthroscopic meniscectomy, 84 days maximum. That assumes no complications or setbacks. Basically 12 weeks vs 20 weeks

guylaroche5 Verified Member Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 The fact that d-wade had his removed in college and still played the way he did has me optimistic for Saunders as a Blue Jay. I worry for him post free agency though.

I worry for him post free agency though. Sounds like he should be fine short-term. I hope he didn't sign off on a lifetime of knee pain just to come back 3 months early this year though.

Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 Or AA's wife. See, the joke here is that Jesse Litch's dad used to post on the bluejays.com forum... I don't mind explaining the joke because a lot of people don't know that... Plus, sometimes explaining a joke can be done in a funny way so that the explanation is also part of the joke. Like this, only sometimes better...
JFD Old-Timey Member Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 lol We used to hear this all the time with the JPR regime. 2 weeks = 10 weeks. Mid April = Mid July yeah.. they don't want his injury impacting ticket sales so they make up this BS.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 yeah.. they don't want his injury impacting ticket sales so they make up this BS. I think Saunders' family has already bought their flex packs... Don't think anyone else is buying tickets based on him.
