L54 Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Great job by AA to acquire more depth. Much better than someone like Chris Young.
JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 There's probably some opt out clause in there anyway that if he's not on the roster by some date he becomes a FA again. It's a minor league deal and they're never a bad thing. Worse case he doesn't work out best case maybe he has something left in the tank and helps the Jays and eats some innings either as a starter, swing man, reliever. Maybe he'll surprise everyone and give at least some good appearances at the MLB level. Get something out of him. Certainly isn't the worst person to bring into camp and see what he can offer either in ST or maybe after sometime in Buffalo.

ScientificReason Verified Member Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 Too bad it was not 2005, oh well low cost I guess. We need an outfielder more then a pitcher now lol, this team.
ScientificReason Verified Member Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 I just dont see him as a starting option unless there is some terrible bus crash killing half our starters... Don't f***ing say that man it could happen, this team has a hex. If this happens it's on you man.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 This is a popular move just because of the name. Get over the excitement guys and put your expectations down to 0. It's like trading/signing a Vernon Wells or a Ryan Howard. The performance no longer equals the name. Oh I was expecting a cy young out of him.

Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 Very possible, Johan and Condor don't play a single game in Jays uniform.

Nafro Verified Member Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 I would think Santana could take a lot from tapping into Buehrle's game plan. Its really a nothing to lose scenario.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 Yeah. Didn't Molina pull a monster shot into the upper deck about 15 feet off the left field foul pole? That was a fun opening day. That ball was hit like 15 feet away from my dad and I.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 Wow...so much #Cap'n-obvious in here!
TheHurl Site Manager Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 This will probably not work out, but everyone said the same thing about Colon and Kazmir's comebacks. Also, Heyman is awful. Santana is 36 in 2 weeks, not 34. Baseball players don't age in years they don't play baseball.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 Baseball players don't age in years they don't play baseball. Then, Rich Harden is eleven years old.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 Also, everyone over the age of 30. I am terrible with numbers. Will be interesting to know the terms of this one. Often veterans coming in have out clauses by a certain date if they aren't added to the roster, also might have a clause where it's only a starting role.
Caper Verified Member Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 I wonder if they will have Delabar's lackey working with Santana.. and whether that can help.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 Johan could be a good teacher for Norris.

TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 @JonHeymanCBS: Johan santana has agreed to sign with blue jays. Santana is still only 34. Wouldn't bet against him. http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-laughing002.gif
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 Dont mind this at all. Looks like this might solidify the starting 5 and take pressure off of Sanchez, Norris and Estrada. Also gives a better picture of what the bullpen might look like. If he doesnt work out as a starter by Juneish, then at least 1 of those 3 should be stretched out and a more obvious choice. And god forbid one of our starters should happen to step on a sprinkler head, well now we have more depth. I like this signing because it puts pressure on Sanchez and Norris. Both guys want to start the season in the rotation, and now a 36 year old vet who's made more than 100M in his career is walking into camp. It'll drive them to perform as best as they can if they want to make the opening day rotation. This is a popular move just because of the name. Get over the excitement guys and put your expectations down to 0. It's like trading/signing a Vernon Wells or a Ryan Howard. The performance no longer equals the name. The last time he was pitching, he threw a no-hitter.
Inklink Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 I guess we'll soon hear an update: backed out of deal, signed with Braves.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 I guess we'll soon hear an update: backed out of deal, signed with Braves. The fact that Johan did not sign with an NL team or a team in a pitcher's park surprises me. Either the interest wasn't there for him or the Jays offered him the best chance of making a big league rotation. Wouldn't surprise me if they want Johan to win the #5 spot so they can put both Sanchez and Estrada in the pen, but that has to be the longest of long shots at this point. If Santana can make it to mid-March without hurting himself it would be more than I expect. But still, no risk signing. Can't complain. Maybe the baseball god's sacrificed Saunders to give us Santana's resurgence. Okay, I'm trying to look on the bright side here.

It'll drive them to perform as best as they can if they want to make the opening day rotation. I guess I should have proof read that... What I meant to say is IF he works out it they wont be pressured into a number 5 role for the rest of the season. It doesnt seem very likely that he would get a start before May in the best of situations. What I dont want to see is Norris and Sanchez trying to over pitch their way into a SP role before they are ready. I dont mind them getting a few starts when we need them, but not 15+ straight games. With luck both will come into their own this season but I dont like the idea of rushing them. I have the same worries for Estrada: marginal pitcher, new team, could be decent but probably mediocre as a SP that is trying too hard.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 Sanchez and Norris should open the year in AAA regardless of performance. I don't understand why they say Sanchez will battle for a rotation spot but if he doesn't win he will end up in the pen. Why did they spend the last several years treating him with kid gloves if they were just going to decide on a bullpen role so fast. He was building up innings and now he goes from getting 175+ to maybe 70-80 innings? He needs to keep starting regardless of what level he is at. Complete waste of talent when vets who have done the job are available. Agreed. Norris and Sanchez should be in AAA and Estrada should be the fifth starter and Hendriks the swing man. They want to compensate for doing jack s*** to fix the pen, but Sanchez really needs to learn how to get minor league hitters out before they can expect him to do it against big leaguers (30 inning sample aside).
